Synopsis:

From the New York Times bestselling author of the Brown Sisters trilogy, comes a laugh-out-loud story about a quirky content creator and a clean-cut athlete testing their abilities to survive the great outdoors--and each other.

Bradley Graeme is pretty much perfect. He's a star football player, manages his OCD well (enough), and comes out on top in all his classes . . . except the ones he shares with his ex-best friend, Celine.

Celine Bangura is conspiracy-theory-obsessed. Social media followers eat up her takes on everything from UFOs to holiday overconsumption--yet, she's still not cool enough for the popular kids' table. Which is why Brad abandoned her for the in-crowd years ago. (At least, that's how Celine sees it.)

These days, there's nothing between them other than petty insults and academic rivalry. So when Celine signs up for a survival course in the woods, she's surprised to find Brad right beside her.

Forced to work as a team for the chance to win a grand prize, these two teens must trudge through not just mud and dirt but their messy past. And as this adventure brings them closer together, they begin to remember the good bits of their history. But has too much time passed . . . or just enough to spark a whole new kind of relationship?

Review:

Hey, guys!

While I wasn’t really in the mood to read a YA romance, I still had so much fun reading this book with my book club. I really loved Bradley. He was the best character in this book and I was constantly giggling at his affection for Celine was just so heartwarming and sweet. Celine, unfortunately, was not my favorite. I found her to be unnecessarily mean at times - however! her feelings and motives end up making sense and her backstory and eventual vulnerability really caused me to warm up to her. The characterization was so nicely done and the characters were so realistic. I loved the romantic bits throughout & the characters passion for their hobbies was so nice to read about.

I had a hard time plowing through this book at times because of the pacing. It just felt like this story was just missing that extra layer of depth that I’m used to in Talia Hibbert books. I really wish that there had been more of a focus on their friends and family.

I also really love Bradley’s love of writing. It was quite evident that Hibbert took inspiration from her own feelings. It was so relatable. Celine, however, just didn’t feel as connected to her love for the law. Her desire to go into law just didn’t seem as real.

Overall, this was so sweet. I loved the banter and the awesome one liners. Swipe to see my tabs! If you’re looking for a sweet YA rom-com that will make you laugh and possibly shed a tear, this is for you!

Goodreads synopsis:

Isabel has one rule: no dating.
It's easier--
It's safer--
It's better--
--for the other person.
She's got issues. She's got secrets. She's got rheumatoid arthritis.
But then she meets another sick kid.
He's got a chronic illness Isabel's never heard of, something she can't even pronounce. He understands what it means to be sick. He understands her more than her healthy friends. He understands her more than her own father who's a doctor.
He's gorgeous, fun, and foul-mouthed. And totally into her.
Isabel has one rule: no dating.
It's complicated--
It's dangerous--
It's never felt better--
--to consider breaking that rule for him.

Content Warning: ableism

Hey, guys!

When diving into this book, I was really nervous that the representation would be harmful or dishonest to the experiences of others; however, this wasn't the case. Sick Kids in Love is a #ownvoices YA novel that follows two teens who experience chronic "invisible" illnesses. Full disclosure, I am an able bodied human, but that doesn't stop me for appreciating the knowledge that this story has provided to me. I'm so thankful to the author for writing such a captivating and educational story.

Isabel struggles with chronic pain from her arthritis. Her "invisible" illness then causes her to struggle on a day-to-day basis. Some days are worse than others, but she's learned to manage her pain -- alone. Isabel also struggles to verbalize her pain and struggles because of the negative issues she's had to face. Her friends and family don't understand her illness. They don't understand the issues and struggles that she faces every day.

Sasha has Gaucher Disease. His illness isn't invisible, and has some really potentially deadly and painful symptoms that keep Sasha from going to school consistently, refraining from hospital visits, and maintaining the friendships that he so desperately would love to have.

This book discusses the concept of "invisible" and "visible" illnesses so well. These characters are so young, but have constantly had to juggle their illnesses, their doctors, their families, etc. Isabel is constantly undermined and gaslit by doctors even though she is in terrible terrible pain that they can't see. Sasha is constantly held back from the experiences that he wants to experience, not just by himself, but by his family and doctors. He's constantly in the hospital from his bones breaking or from an organ that suddenly decides to shut down on him. He's in constant fear that his body will decide to shut down or turn on him. However, these kids don't let that fear keep them from being forced to act and pursue being "perfectly healthy." They're proud of the struggles they've had to experience and being a disabled person is a part of their identity.

This book is just so freaking inspiring and eye-opening. Please read it.

Not only is there a fantastic message, the kids fall in love (hence the title). This romance story is so wonderfully executed. Isabel is a girl after my own heart. She refuses to change herself or change her story for a boy, but then she meets Sasha. Sasha is just a cinnamon roll of a person. I absolutely adore him. Sasha is a total dork who just falls for Isabel's bold and fearless outlook, her closed off wariness that surrounds attaining friendships, and her desire to learn. She's a risk taker and she's really rude sometimes, but he likes that about her because she doesn't bullshit him. She doesn't want to admit it (she's so stubborn), but she falls for Sasha too. They become besties. They bond over his dynamic and engaging family, their Jewish identities, and the beauty found only in New York City.

Their relationship was just so relatable. Seeing them fall in love just reaffirmed my love for my own person. Our favorite thing to do is to just sit and do our own thing, but be together. I think that Isabel and Sasha even said something about how they just wanted to be homebodies and do nothing together because they just wanted to be near each other. I just loved that so much.

This story was just everything I could have hoped for. I need to buy myself a finished copy ASAP.

Please read this book!

Happy reading:

My Rating: 3.75 stars

Goodreads synopsis:

A fresh, irresistible rom-com from debut author Emma Lord about the chances we take, the paths life can lead us on, and how love can be found in the opposite place you expected.

Meet Pepper, swim team captain, chronic overachiever, and all-around perfectionist. Her family may be falling apart, but their massive fast-food chain is booming ― mainly thanks to Pepper, who is barely managing to juggle real life while secretly running Big League Burger’s massive Twitter account.

Enter Jack, class clown and constant thorn in Pepper’s side. When he isn’t trying to duck out of his obscenely popular twin’s shadow, he’s busy working in his family’s deli. His relationship with the business that holds his future might be love/hate, but when Big League Burger steals his grandma’s iconic grilled cheese recipe, he’ll do whatever it takes to take them down, one tweet at a time.

All’s fair in love and cheese ― that is, until Pepper and Jack’s spat turns into a viral Twitter war. Little do they know, while they’re publicly duking it out with snarky memes and retweet battles, they’re also falling for each other in real life ― on an anonymous chat app Jack built.

As their relationship deepens and their online shenanigans escalate ― people on the internet are shipping them?? ― their battle gets more and more personal, until even these two rivals can’t ignore they were destined for the most unexpected, awkward, all-the-feels romance that neither of them expected.

Hey, guys!

Welcome to the first review of the year! I can't believe that it's already that time! It seems like just yesterday that I was starting up this blog, yet here we are. We're amidst the sixth year of book blogging. Six years of reviews, tags, wrap ups, hauls, and rambles. Thank you for sticking it out with me. I'm so thankful for every single one of you.

Tweet Cute is absolutely what the synopsis says. It's a rom-com through and through. This hilarious, fluffy romance will make you crack up with laughter within the first few chapters and continue to amuse and bring joy as it continues. I'm usually quite wary of books that use social media for their conflict or main twists, however, I really liked how Emma Lord used Twitter throughout. Sometimes an author will put so much emphasis on the influence of social media that it almost becomes unrealistic or obnoxious, however, Emma Lord utilized the app and its functionalities as they are used by today's users. That is, it's just an everyday part of life.

The romance in this book was really fun, but not my favorite. However, there aren't any technical reasons why I didn't enjoy it. I just wasn't jiving with the characters and I wasn't in the right mood to get invested in them. That's on me. I thought their chemistry and their interactions were quite cute and fun. The slow-ish burn romance that took place was golden. I love their wacky personalities and their brands of humor.

I'm getting to the point of my life where high school romances don't particularly excite me. I really enjoyed that it followed seniors, however. Their worries about their futures and the angst that they felt about the oncoming changes that were going to rattle their worlds was really wonderfully done. As a senior in college who is just barely on the brink of full-on adulthood and job-searching, their worries and angst about their lives changing really spoke to me.

While reading, I also felt like the pacing was just a little bit off. There were a couple of moments where I felt like the novel was being led to a conclusion or could be led to a conclusion or resolution, but then another layer of conflict was added on. Sometimes this story just felt so long. I'm not sure if it should be shorter, but I felt like some of the story could have been tightened to fully utilize the really fantastic aspects of the story.

One of the shining bits of the story was the conflict between Pepper's family's burger company and Jack's family's deli. I really love how that conflict was explained toward the end of the novel. I felt like the resolution and explanation were the best part of the book because it made me laugh and it made so much sense. The entire situation was fairly morally gray and the reasoning behind each persons' actions was partially justified and I just really enjoyed that not everything was just black and white.

Though this wasn't my favorite YA rom-com, it was still so much fun. I enjoyed the characters and the conflict and the originality of it. If you enjoy witty banter, twitter drama, discussions on food and baking, genuinely wholesome relationships, and oblivious teens, you will adore this story.

Happy reading!

JACK
“Look.” I glance into the classroom, where Ethan is thoroughly distracted by Stephen and no longer keeping an eye on us. “I may have . . . overreacted.”
Pepper shakes her head. “I told you. I get it. It’s your family.”
“Yeah. But it’s also—well, to be honest, this has been kind of good for business.”
Pepper’s brow furrows, that one little crease returning. “What, the tweets?”
“Yeah.” I scratch the back of my neck, sheepish. “Actually, we had a line out the door yesterday. It was kind of intense.”
“That’s . . . that’s good, right?”
The tone of my voice is clearly not matching up with the words I’m saying, but if I’m being honest, I’m still wary of this whole overnight business boom. And if I’m being honest, I’m even more wary of Pepper. If this really is as much of a family business as she claims it is—to the point where she’s helping run the Twitter handle, when even I know enough about corporate Twitter accounts to know entire teams of experienced people get paid to do that—then she might have had more of a hand in this whole recipe theft thing than she’s letting on.
The fact of the matter is, I can’t trust her. To the point of not knowing whether I can even trust her knowing how our business is doing, or just how badly we need it.
“Yeah, um, I guess.” I try to make it sound noncommittal. My acting skills, much like my breakfast-packing skills, leave much to be desired.
“So . . .”
“So.”
Pepper presses her lips into a thin line, a question in her eyes.
“So, I guess—if your mom really wants you to keep tweeting . . .”
“Wait. Yesterday you were pissed. Two minutes ago you were pissed.”
“I am pissed. You stole from us,” I reiterate. “You stole from an eighty-five-year-old woman.”
“I didn’t—”
“Yeah, yeah, but still. You’re them, and I’m . . . her. It’s like a choose your fighter situation, and we just happen to be the ones up to bat.”
“So you’re saying—you don’t not want me to keep this up?”
“The way I see it, you don’t have to make your mom mad, and we get a few more customers in the door too.”
Pepper takes a breath like she’s going to say something, like she’s going to correct me, but after a moment, she lets it go. Her face can’t quite settle on an expression, toeing the line between dread and relief.
“You’re sure?”
I answer by opening the container she handed me. The smell that immediately wafts out of it should honestly be illegal; it stops kids I’ve never even spoken to in their tracks.
“Are you a witch?” I ask, reaching in and taking a bite of one. It’s like Monster Cake, the Sequel—freaking Christmas in my mouth. I already want more before I’ve even managed to chew. My eyes close as if I’m experiencing an actual drug high—and maybe I am, because I forget myself entirely and say, “This might even be better than our Kitchen Sink Macaroons.”
“Kitchen Sink Macaroons?”
Eyes open again. Yikes. Note to self: dessert is the greatest weapon in Pepper’s arsenal. I swallow my bite so I can answer her.
“It’s kind of well-known, at least in the East Village. It even got in some Hub Seed roundup once. I’d tell you to try some, but you might steal the recipe, so.”
Pepper smiles, then—actually smiles, instead of the little smirk she usually does. It’s not startling, but what it does to me in that moment kind of is.
Before I can examine the unfamiliar lurch in my stomach, the bell rings and knocks the smile right off her face. I follow just behind her, wondering why it suddenly seems too hot in here, like they cranked the air up for December instead of October. I dismiss it by the time I get to my desk—probably just all the Twitter drama and the glory of So Sorry Blondies getting to my head.
“One rule,” she says, as we sit in the last two desks in the back of the room.
I raise my eyebrows at her.
“We don’t take any of it personally.” She leans forward on her desk, leveling with me, her bangs falling into her face. “No more getting mad at each other. Cheese and state.”
“What happens on Twitter stays on Twitter,” I say with a nod of agreement. “Okay, then, second rule: no kid gloves.”
Mrs. Fairchild is giving that stern look over the room that never quite successfully quiets anyone down. Pepper frowns, waiting for me to elaborate.
“I mean—no going easy on each other. If we’re going to play at this, we’re both going to give it our A game, okay? No holding back because we’re . . .”
Friends, I almost say. No, I’m going to say. But then—
“I’d appreciate it if even one of you acknowledged the bell with your silence,” Mrs. Fairchild grumbles.
I turn to Pepper, expecting to find her snapping to attention the way she always does when an adult comes within a hundred feet of disciplining her. But her eyes are still intent on me, like she is sizing something up—like she’s looking forward to something I haven’t anticipated yet.
“All right. No taking it personally. And no holding back.”
She holds her hand out for me to shake again, under the desk so Mrs. Fairchild won’t see it. I smile and shake my head, wondering how someone can be so aggressively seventeen and seventy-five at the same time, and then I take it. Her hand is warm and small in mine, but her grip is surprisingly firm, with a pressure that almost feels like she’s still got her fingers wrapped around mine even after we let go.
I turn back to the whiteboard, a ghost of a smirk on my face. “Let the games begin.”

{Mini-Reviews} Young Adult & New Adult Romance Novels!

Hey, guys!

For the past few months, I've been on such a romance kick --especially new adult and adult romance. I've just really enjoyed reading older protagonists. When it comes to new adult, I've really enjoyed reading romance stories about people in their twenties. Sometimes YA romance is just too young and cringy for my taste. Here are some of the lovely romance novels that I've read lately!

344669104018967042201431

Josh and Hazel's Guide to Not Dating by Christina Lauren
4.9 stars

Roomies by Christina Lauren

4.8 stars

The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren

4.75 stars

If you've been following my recent reads, you'll know that I'm becoming trash for Christina Lauren's books. They're so engaging and addicting. I always love the characters, the story, the romance -- everything. Those ladies just have the best writing style and the best characters. I'm so glad that I've been reading their work. I cannot wait to read more from them. They're my romance crack books.

If you enjoy slow burn, hate to love, and fake relationships turned real, you'll really love these books. They use such bleh tropes, but really make them fantastic. I particularly enjoy all of them, so they just take all of my money.

25883848

The Hating Game by Sally Thorne
5 stars

Another all-time favorite! Ugh! This book is just perfection! This is the perfect example of the hate-to-love trope. I can only praise this book because it's just so freaking wonderful.

I definitely will be reading this again because I can't get it out of my head.

30312700

Alex, Approximately by Jenn Bennett
3 stars

I quite enjoyed this little contemporary, however, I really didn't enjoy the "talking on the internet, meeting irl, having crushes on each other, and allowing confusion to ensue because of the lack of communication" trope. I think that the confusion from that executed trope just added an extra element that wasn't needed. It would have been a much better fluffy romance without it. Overall, it was really cute and I liked the characters. The way that the author handled trauma, teen drug use, and safe and consensual sexual escapades was really nicely done. I love how sex-positive and healthy this romance was. It was also nice to read a hate-to-love romance that was written for teens. I'll definitely have to check out more of Jenn Bennett's work.

One True Loves by Taylor Jenkins Reid
4.8 stars

I loved this book! Taylor Jenkins Reid did not disappoint! I've read two of her works now and I'm just so freaking impressed with how wonderful they are. They're cheesy in the best way, but so original too. I didn't find myself guessing what would happen next and I really enjoyed the pacing. I also really loved the characters in this book. They were so realistic and so raw. Their emotions are so well done and I cannot believe that Reid did that...SHE DID THAT! I definitely recommend this book. I love it so much.

40597810

Daisy Jones + The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid
5 stars

Trigger/Content Warnings for: substance abuse/addiction and abortion

Guys! This book! It was so freaking wonderful. I absolutely love love love everything about this book. It's so iconic and memorable. I can't stop thinking about it, and it's almost been a full month and a half since I've finished it. The formatting of the story was so fascinating and the way that Reid connected each character's voice through their perspectives was so masterful. I do not think anyone could write a book like this again. Fantastic! I cannot wait to read more from Taylor Jenkins Reid and I cannot wait to get my hands on the audiobook and reread this book. I need to read it again.

36579299

Fight or Flight by Samantha Young
3.5-3.75 stars

Trigger/content warnings for: misogynistic comments about physical appearance, parental abuse, attempted sexual assault, abuse, domestic violence, cheating, talk of miscarriages and abortion, and slut shaming

I'm sort of on the fence when it comes to this book. It was fluffy, it was steamy, it was a bit mindless...but there are an equal amount of pros and cons to this story. I really enjoyed the enemies-to-lovers trope and the FWB aspect, but it was absolutely infuriating at times. I was so annoyed with these characters, but so completely invested in their story. I had to finish. This book could be read as questionable, but I did really enjoy it.

32075853
Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows by Balli Kaur Jaswal
4 stars

Last year, my boyfriend Alex and I went on a trip to Seattle where I got to present my academic work to a bunch of academic professionals. During our free time, we visited the Amazon Book Store and this was one of the books that we picked up. Alex read it right away and loved it. It took me a bit longer (who's surprised) and I also enjoyed it, though I read it via audiobook.

I really enjoyed the multicultural aspects of this story and I really loved the characters that developed throughout the story. The stories that the widows wrote were so hilarious and so steamy. Some of them were really shocking.

I definitely recommend this book to anyone. It touches on some important issues and concepts. I cannot wait to read more from Balli Kaur Jaswal.

New Adult Reviews -Colleen Hoover & Erin Watt Edition

Hey, guys!

I'm back with another group of reviews! This past year was a really great year for reading new adult romance. I really enjoyed exploring the genre and finding the authors that I enjoyed. I'm excited to see what other new adult books I pick up in 2019. Stay tuned for more reviews and maybe some rereads!

TW: trauma, questionable advances, non-consensual sexual advances

I have a love-hate relationship with this book. I absolutely adore the characters - Fallon and Ben. I loved the whole concept of this book. It was really unrealistic but so addicting to read and I couldn't put it down. I really wish it had been executed a little differently, but overall I really enjoyed the story. Though I really enjoyed the concept and the characters. I also really loved how the book would make fun of itself sometimes. It was sort of meta, but also not? I'm not sure what to think.

With that being said, there were also quite a few aspects that were really problematic. I'm still not sure what to rate this book because of these elements. I really did not enjoy how Colleen used trauma and exploited the character's self-confidence issues to further the relationship. That really irritated me and made me feel gross for enjoying the book. Ben also really did not understand what consent meant. Some of the "romantic" scenes made me very uncomfortable and I wish they had been handled with more care. I understood what Colleen was going for, but the execution was just not stellar.

I think I'm going to reread this book in 2019. I'd love to mark up my book and write a longer review. I'm just so unsure at this point, but I really wanted to get my initial thoughts down.

When reading this book, read with caution.

I read this book while on a plane to and from Seattle, Washington and let me tell you...this was a hard book to read. The topic was incredibly impactful and very hard to stomach at times. This probably the most impactful CoHo book to date. I really did enjoy this book quite a lot. Lily is such an admirable and wonderful character. I absolutely adored reading her story. She is one of those characters that I can't help but root for and be proud of. She was raw, she was realistic, she was vulnerable, she was stronger than I could ever be.

The powerful message of this book is so inspirational but so heartbreaking. I love the originality of this storyline and I'm so glad that I picked this up. If you read this book, I implore that you read the author's note after finishing this book...but only AFTER, okay? It's pretty essential to the whole ending of the book.

This was another CoHo book that I could hardly put down (that tends to be the case whenever I read her books). This was another romance novel that touched on such a relevant and heartbreaking for both parties in the relationship: infertility. While reading this book, I felt so incredibly empathetic for Quinn and Graham. Their love is so beautiful and real, but when they begin to have problems having a child, their relationship and marriage are tested.

This story was absolutely beautiful. It is definitely my second favorite CoHo book. I can't wait to read what Colleen gives us next.

I'm also so glad that I got to go see Colleen during her Chicago tour stop. It was definitely an adventure to remember.

I'm not usually prone to reading romance novels that are solely written for those who just want drama drama drama. I'm not usually a mega fan of books that are so unrealistic and fantastical that I roll my eyes every other page, but I surprisingly was quite engaged when reading this book. It was just so mindless and fast that I couldn't put it down. I'm not sure if I'll continue the series, but we'll have to see. I might pick them up from the library.

This was just really fun to read. If you're looking for something mindless, potentially sexy, and full of drama..this is for you!

When I first started this book, I was absolutely addicted. I loved it so much, but once it hit the half-way mark I really started to hate it. Once the two love interests got together, it was just bad. I was not a fan of the romance. One of my comments was "gag me with a tuning fork". I think I said that two or three times while reading this book.

Overall, the first half of the book was excellent, but the last half really killed it. I just really did not enjoy the cringy-ness of the relationship. It wasn't executed well.

Happy reading!
