Goodreads synopsis:

Aurelia is the first princess born to the Renalten crown in two hundred years, destined to fulfill a treaty by journeying to marry Valentin, the prince of Achelva – Renalt’s greatest enemy. Rumors of an unwell, cruel prince abound, and the only thing that eclipses Aurelia’s apprehension of her impending marriage is her fear of those who’d kill her to prevent it.

When an assassination attempt forces Aurelia to use forbidden magic to save a stranger, she is driven from Renalt by the witch-hunting Tribunal and a mob out for blood. But before she can claim asylum in the court of her betrothed, her travel party turns on her, forcing her to trade places with her treacherous lady-in-waiting, Lisette.

Now penniless in Achleva and bereft of her identity, Aurelia must decide if she wants to surrender to her new life or fight for her old one, all while navigating the complicated ties binding her to the enigmatic prince, the unquiet ghost of an ancient queen, and a poisonous plant called bloodleaf.

Aurelia is a pawn in a centuries-long game of love, power, and war— and if she can’t extricate herself from it before Lisette marries Valentin in her stead, she may face losses far more devastating than her crown.

Hey, guys!

    I was sent this beautiful ARC for an honest review. All thoughts and feelings are my own. Thank you HMH Teen for sending me the promotional package!

Trigger Warnings for rape, self-harm, war, intense violence

    If you guys have followed me for a while, you'll recognize that I am a massive fan of high fantasy novels with a focus on politics, magic, intense characterization, and fast-paced plots. I'm always jazzed to read a fantasy book that revolves around an arranged marriage -- I'm not sure why. I guess I'm just fascinated by the actions of the two people and how they respond to what they're being ordered to do. Marriage is such a special and sacred bond to me. I just love how girls/women respond to those situations, especially. Bring on the feminism!

    Anyway, this book is pitched as a Goose Girl retelling, but I honestly haven't read that fairy tale. I read a minor synopsis after writing this review, but I think that this book absolutely stands on its own. The plot is so fantastically original and the characters and magic are so engaging. I loved it so much.

    The book automatically drops us into the action and the political intrigue and discourse of Achleva and Renalt. I honestly loved the clash of the two kingdoms. The conflict wasn't particularly intense or complex, but it was still so much fun to read about. The characters really drove this book rather than the actual plot. Don't get me wrong, the plot was lovely and solid, but the characters really took the cake for me. I cannot wait to read the next two books to see what happens. This was just a fantastic introduction to a trilogy and a fantastic glimpse into Crystal Smith's writing capabilities.

    This book was just so entertaining and fun to read. There were times where I would laugh out loud, and I totally cried toward the end. I need need need the sequel to this book. I'm so excited for everyone to get their hands on this book because they will be so pleased.

Thank you, again, HMH for sending me an ARC copy!

Happy reading!

{Guest Review: Alex} Two Great Fantasies || Children of Blood & Bone by Tomi Adeyemi and Vicious by V.E. Schwab

I haven’t submitted anything to Liv’s blog since April but I have been reading a fair amount, actually. I’m going to review two books per submission and two submissions for a total of four reviews. I didn’t want to write long out thoughts on them, so I decided to compress and group them.

This group consists of Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi and Vicious by V.E. Schwab. Both stories focus on supernatural powers and abilities. The novels are clearly fantasy. Both books were really enjoyable and fun to read. I’d recommend both to anyone in the mood for superpowers and fantasy elements in storytelling.

 Goodreads synopsis:

They killed my mother.

They took our magic.

They tried to bury us.

Now we rise.

Zélie Adebola remembers when the soil of Orïsha hummed with magic. Burners ignited flames, Tiders beckoned waves, and Zélie’s Reaper mother summoned forth souls.

But everything changed the night magic disappeared. Under the orders of a ruthless king, maji were killed, leaving Zélie without a mother and her people without hope.

Now Zélie has one chance to bring back magic and strike against the monarchy. With the help of a rogue princess, Zélie must outwit and outrun the crown prince, who is hell-bent on eradicating magic for good.

Danger lurks in Orïsha, where snow leoponaires prowl and vengeful spirits wait in the waters. Yet the greatest danger may be Zélie herself as she struggles to control her powers and her growing feelings for an enemy.

~~~
     Avatar The Last Airbender meets Africa. If Aang was a teenage girl with white hair. And could control dead spirits. And shadows. But seriously, Tomi Adeyemi has created a compelling story featuring strong male and female characters, each with their own trials and shining moments. The characters deal with prejudice, from both sides of the issue. There are some unavoidable tropes, with the evil ruler and romantic pairings, but they were written wonderfully. I liked this book so much that Liv got me an ARC after I read it and I bought the audiobook. The narrator, Bahni Turpin, did a wonderful job. I probably would have rated the audiobook higher, but I primarily listened to it while I was at work. I might listen to the audiobook and follow along with the ARC at some point in the future.
      I am impatiently waiting for my pre-ordered copy of the sequel and would love to be chosen to receive an ARC of it too.
Goodreads synopsis:
Victor and Eli started out as college roommates—brilliant, arrogant, lonely boys who recognized the same sharpness and ambition in each other. In their senior year, a shared research interest in adrenaline, near-death experiences, and seemingly supernatural events reveals an intriguing possibility: that under the right conditions, someone could develop extraordinary abilities. But when their thesis moves from the academic to the experimental, things go horribly wrong.
~~~

     It’s fun to see two supervillains fight each other. One thinks he is the hero. The other knows he isn’t.

     That is how I would describe Vicious. The book follows two college friends on their quest to make superpowers a reality. They figure out a method and then go separate ways. The ex-friends come head-to-head years later in an attempt to kill one another. Neither character is a good person and that’s okay. I think the biggest selling point is that there aren’t heroes. The series is called The Villains. Schwab isn’t trying to trick readers into thinking that there is a hero.

     The book was fun to read. It felt like a Marvel film. There was a supernatural backstory, interesting secondary characters, and a climactic final fight. And a sequel. And like Marvel movies, the main problem is that isn’t ambitious enough. The protagonist wins, there’s going to be another one, and the antagonist probably won’t come back. One of the antagonists at least. The comparison probably isn’t deserved since the book came out in 2013 and Marvel had just started Phase Two of the MCU. But with my first read through in 2018, I can’t help it.

Goodreads synopsis:

Love speaks in flowers. Truth requires thorns.

Travel to a world of dark bargains struck by moonlight, of haunted towns and hungry woods, of talking beasts and gingerbread golems, where a young mermaid's voice can summon deadly storms and where a river might do a lovestruck boy's bidding but only for a terrible price.

Inspired by myth, fairy tale, and folklore, #1 New York Times–bestselling author Leigh Bardugo has crafted a deliciously atmospheric collection of short stories filled with betrayals, revenge, sacrifice, and love.

Perfect for new readers and dedicated fans, these tales will transport you to lands both familiar and strange—to a fully realized world of dangerous magic that millions have visited through the novels of the Grishaverse.

This collection of six stories includes three brand-new tales, all of them lavishly illustrated with art that changes with each turn of the page, culminating in six stunning full-spread illustrations as rich in detail as the stories themselves.

Hey, guys!

     Back in December, my boyfriend's lovely family gifted me this book for Christmas. I was so excited to read the stories and be re-immersed into the Grisha world. This book totally lived up to the hype and my expectations. The stories were fantastic, the writing was A+ as always, the illustrations were stunning, and the book itself was just amazing. I love these stories so much. I couldn't find anything that I didn't like about this book. It was just straight-up awesome. Cue the excessive gushing and lack of critical analysis.

     This book was just gorgeous! I'm so in love with the stories that Leigh Bardugo created for this world. Each story was so hauntingly beautiful and the language and imagery that they created were just so imaginative and stunning. I'm so pleased with both the physical look of the book and the actual content itself. The illustrations throughout the book were just so intricately done and the detail that went into their making is just astoundingly beautiful and perfectly reflected the stories and their spooky vibes. Each story was intricately crafted in a way that left you desperately wanting more, yet still satisfied with how their ending was summed up.

      Each story in this Grisha anthology is inspired by common known and lesser known fairy tales, myths, and folklore. The five stories each represent the five areas/countries in the Grisha universe. The stories are such a fantastic representation of the Grisha world. Each story adds more to the world building and reveals a more in depth look at the history of the world.

~~~
     I'm not going to get too into detail when discussing this book because I'll just start rambling and fangirling and that doesn't help anyone figure out if they should read this book. Not only that, I have to refrain from spoiling the first 4 books of this series.
    First of all, I'd just like to say that this book was a roller coaster of emotions all throughout. The relationships and continual world building were just absolutely fantastic. The characters are all just so wonderfully fleshed out and they naturally grow with the series which is so delightful to read. I really loved the dual perspective aspect of this book. It made the story so much more vibrant and well rounded. Each perspective of every character added a kind of depth that I usually don't read in fantasy novels. Maas's writing style and ability is just so wonderful. I adored every bit of this book.
    As I've continued on with this series, I've grown to love these characters like they are my own children. Each one's story is just so rich and different and their personalities are just so fascinating. They clash, they click, and some just cannot get along. That's what I love about these characters. They aren't the typical characters and they aren't perfect at all. Their actions never seem to be written specifically to move the plot along. The events that occur are just perfectly written and the story just flows so nicely. The constant twists and turns and additions to the overall plotline are just so cleverly done. I rarely guess what happens next.
    This book blew my mind. I finished this book and I was absolutely crushed. Sarah J. Maas always seems to tear me apart with her books...I should just accept it and anticipate it, but I'm always hoping for some semblance of a happy ending...nope! We get a cliffhanger! Every time! I need TOG #7! I need to know what happens to Aelin and Rowan and the gang next! Give me Aelin or give me death! (No. Just kidding...but seriously...I need her back.)
     I'd like to gush about the character and relationship development...just for a bit. Feel free to skip these if you'd like, but Julia hasn't gotten to Empire of Storms, so I'm dying to gush. Each relationship has progressed so naturally and so beautifully. I cannot wait to see where these relationships go. I cannot imagine how everything will be wrapped up in October.
     Rowan and Aelin grow so much in this book. I just adore how their relationship has blossomed. Their emotional and physical bond is just so inspiring and their vulnerability with one another is magical. I cannot believe how much I love them. I only want what's best for them. I just want them to live happily ever after. If SJM kills them off or kills one of them off in the next book I will break. I'm sure of it.
     Although Dorian was my least favorite character in this book, I feel like he's growing back into his sassy and strong character. He seemed to kind of fly under the radar in EoS, but I think that is because of his experiences in the previous books. A lot of people have been discussing his rapid character change, but I actually understand how his character has been changing. He's gone through some emotional and physical trauma. He's trying to move past it the best he can. I support him and I hope that he and Manon get together in the end. I think she's good for him. I think they are thoroughly adorable!
On that note...Manon. My queen. The light of the Witch clans. The most badass witch that will ever be (probably). This chick is just so fantastically written. The amount of development that she goes through is so wonderfully done. I cannot wait to see how her character grows in TOG7. I love her developing relationship with the gang, I love her bond with Elide, I love her with Dorian. I love her whole character. I'd definitely read a prequel series about Manon...in fact, I'm sort of demanding it. I need more backstory on Manon!
    Elide. What a strong little cinnamon roll. I love her so much. I cannot wait to see how her character grows. After the trauma that she's gone through, she's shown such immense strength in the face of danger. I love her. I love her. I love her. She is a strong independent
 and healing woman. She deserves every happiness and all of the answers to her questions. I hope that she and Lorcan get together and are happy. I need that in my life. They are precious.
    Lorcan. Oh my goodness, his development was probably one of my favorite parts of this book. I love him, I love his character development, I love his loyalty, I love his flaws, I love his bond with Elide, I love how he's questioning his past decisions, and I just want him to be happy. Oh my goodness, the events that went down in the last chunk of the book literally broke me. LORCAN JUST DESERVES ALL OF THE HAPPINESS!
     Aedion. Oh this man just goes through so much in this book. Mainly emotional, but wow oh wow...He deserves all of the happiness...
      I know I've basically said that they all deserve all of the happiness, but they do! These characters are just so near and dear to my heart. They deserve all of the happiness!
    This book was just absolutely fantastic. I highly recommend this series. If you didn't enjoy the first couple of books and didn't feel the sparks like you anticipated, push through to Heir of Fire and the rest because the amount of depth and dimension in these sequels are just out of this world. 10/10 would recommend forever.
Goodreads synopsis:
Remember, it’s only a game…
Scarlett Dragna has never left the tiny island where she and her sister, Tella, live with their powerful, and cruel, father. Now Scarlett’s father has arranged a marriage for her, and Scarlett thinks her dreams of seeing Caraval—the faraway, once-a-year performance where the audience participates in the show—are over.
But this year, Scarlett’s long-dreamt-of invitation finally arrives. With the help of a mysterious sailor, Tella whisks Scarlett away to the show. Only, as soon as they arrive, Tella is kidnapped by Caraval’s mastermind organizer, Legend. It turns out that this season’s Caraval revolves around Tella, and whoever finds her first is the winner.
Scarlett has been told that everything that happens during Caraval is only an elaborate performance. Nevertheless she becomes enmeshed in a game of love, heartbreak, and magic. And whether Caraval is real or not, Scarlett must find Tella before the five nights of the game are over or a dangerous domino effect of consequences will be set off, and her beloved sister will disappear forever.
Welcome, welcome to Caraval…beware of getting swept too far away.
~~~

Hey, guys!

      It's been so long since I read this book, but it's so fresh in my mind. This book was so fantastically magical. I was pretty skeptical at first. Like the nerd that I am, I started reading reviews the night before - just to get a feel for what I was getting myself into. The reviews from the people that I followed were actually kind of negative, so I was a bit worried for a bit. Once I got into the book, however, I was sucked into the intriguing world that Garber created.

     The story follows the sisters Scarlett and Donatella Dragna who dream of leaving their tiny island and their cruel father. Both dream of watching the mysterious Caraval and seeing the even more elusive mastermind behind Caraval, Legend. Their dream of attending is destroyed when their father arranges a marriage between Scarlett and an unknown man. Scarlett and Donatella suddenly receive an invitation to Caraval and are secretly whisked away to Caraval by a random sailor. Tella is soon kidnapped by Legend and Scarlett soon finds out that her sister has become a part of the game, a game which she has to win. If she doesn't, her sister will disappear forever.

      This book was such a wild ride from the beginning. For the majority of the book I had absolutely no idea what was going to happen. Unlike the books I have been reading for the last few months, this book was wonderfully mysterious and I thankfully rarely ever could guess what would happen next. I really enjoyed the overall plot, but some of the aspects to the plot really lacked in my opinion, thus the 4-star rating.

      The characters, although very interesting and well thought out, were still very two-dimensional when it came to their personalities. There weren't any kind of character arcs and when it came to the end, I felt like they got pretty annoying. The relationships between the characters were very annoying as well. One of the main male characters along with Scarlett's character had a really great concept between them, but it still lacked an emotional depth that I find to be really essential when creating a love interest. There were so many moments in the book where Garber could have remedied that. Hopefully those issues will be resolved in the next book. I also really didn't like the sister-relationship between Tella and Scarlett as much as I hoped I would. There were so many reviewers and readers that were blown away by their relationship, but I really didn't think their relationship was that great until the last section of the book. Even during that last section, the relationship wasn't as fleshed out or explained as I would have hoped. However, I felt like it was a really great introduction to the world, the characters, and a magical series.

      On that note, the magic wasn't up to par either. However, it was a mysterious introduction to the world and every part of the book was majorly mysterious and I wasn't mad that it wasn't explained super well. It was a such an addicting read because I had no idea what would happen next

      This whole book was a maze of mystery and magic and wonder. I was thoroughly impressed and entertained and I can't wait to read more of Stephanie Garber's books. I am so impressed with Garber's writing skills and her ability to create a whole new world that is shrouded in mystery. The whole story was wrapped up really nicely but still has left me craving more. The cliffhanger is real. I can't wait.

Goodreads synopsis:

TRUST is a young adult, mythological, urban fantasy thrill ride about the darkly fantastical, supernatural Museion that has secretly protected humanity’s greatest treasures for millennia, and Anna, the sixteen-year-old New York girl who is the unknowing Heir to it all:

TRUST.
That’s what the voice inside my head kept repeating when I woke up between the infamous lion statues of the New York Public Library, with no idea how I got there and no memory of the last year of my life.

The only person I ever trusted was my mother, who lied about everything.

I want to trust myself, despite my missing memories. But hearing a voice inside my head obviously isn’t a good thing, especially since it know things I don’t… like how to speak Ancient Sumerian, the fact that yellow-eyed people aren’t actually people, and that my mother’s Egyptian ankh necklace was the key to unlocking the truth she was hiding:

I’m the last in a long lineage of powerful women whose secrets date back to the ancient Library of Alexandria.

I’m fighting like hell to stay alive while searching for both my missing mother and the truth, desperate to find something or someone I can trust.

Trust Q&A With Jodi Baker:

Q: What inspired you to write Trust?

I had a dream about that I was following a young woman in a muddied and bloody toga, running up a gray and white marble, spiraling staircase that seemed to have no end. As we raced up, up, and up, she kept trying to gather up these ancient books and scrolls that were piled on the steps. I would always wake up before I could find out what was chasing us, or why she was trying to save books and scrolls.  I told a friend of mine about the dream. I said: “I really want to know who she is and what she was running from.” My friend, who happens to be an incredible playwright, said, ever-so-seriously: “Write it and find out.” That gave me the courage to begin!

Q: How did you start writing YA fiction? Were you a fan of it already?

The most important, soul-searing books were those I read between the ages of nine and eighteen. I always felt that those writers took me seriously, even though the world around me didn’t yet. I write the kinds of book that I love to read, which is why it’s a thrilling honor to be a Young Adult Author.
Q: What is your favorite YA book or series?

I love to read as much as I love to write (my walls are lined with books instead of wallpaper!) so I’ve got a HUGE list! My YA Must-Reads always have a kick-ass female heroine and take place in an intricate, intoxicating world I’d love to live in, like Laini Taylor’s Daughter of Smoke & Bone trilogy, Kendare Blake’s Antigoddess, and of course, anything by Cassandra Clare. I adore urban fantasy that takes place in/alongside our mortal world, like Shadowshaper, by Daniel Jose Older, but right now, I’m obsessing over Sarah J Maas’s stunning A Court of Thorns and Roses fantasy series.

(SAME!)

Q: The Arriviste has stated that Trust is "America's answer to Harry Potter...". How does it feel to have that kind of praise and would you consider your book to be another Harry Potter-esque novel or something entirely different?

To see TRUST mentioned in the same sentence as Harry Potter was a total out-of-body experience! When I read that review, I literally fell off my chair. The Arriviste review pointed out that the two series have characters that are born into extraordinary circumstances that they knew nothing about. Anna and Harry both find themselves forced into epic supernatural wars that began before their time. Both are gifted with the enormous responsibility and opportunity to make choices that will affect our destiny. Both series have a world that expands and characters that grow within each book. I love that Harry Potter has mysterious British castles and a magical world ruled by wizards. I also love that TRUST has a diverse, ‘melting-pot’ set of characters that walk right out of ancient mythology to fight each other in the cement and steel, high-tech world of modern-day New York City. The biggest difference is that TRUST has a female heroine, which is intrinsic to the story of the Between Lions Series. I would be beyond ecstatic if readers related to Anna, Styx, and Cax as they do to Harry, Ron, and Hermione. That is every writer’s dream!

Q: Which of your characters is your favorite?

Anna rescues boys from prisons, fights off Werejaguar attacks and always makes a way out of no way. One of my favorite lines in TRUST is when she realizes: “Yesterday things happened to me. Today I want to be the Girl Who Happens To Things.” Anna Perankios is my extraordinary hero.

Q: Do you have advice for aspiring authors?

I recently spoke on a panel about how to ‘Unlock Your Inner Creativist’, which you can check out on my JodiBakerAuthor Facebook page. I also created a set of inspirational Writing/Creativity Rules, which are posted at http://www.jodibakerbooks.com/muse-ings-blog. The best advice I have is what my amazing friend told me: If you have an idea, whether it’s a line of dialog, a character, or a place you see in your head, give yourself permission to follow that spark of curiosity on the page, to ’Write it and find out!”

About Jodi Baker:

As a child the only punishment Jodi ever feared was not being allowed her weekly visit to the library. At boarding school, though an enthusiastic student, her late night reading fests frequently made her late for first period. Luckily, it was a high school for Performing Arts, where the classes she was good at (writing, theatre, dance & visual art) happened in the afternoon. After attending Carnegie Mellon University, she spent several months performing plays on the island of Cyprus, which was where she fell in love with mythology. When she returned to the U.S.A. Jodi lived in New York City. After a summer of working as a tour guide for the Natural History Museum, Jodi developed an addiction for wandering through all of NYC's incredible Museums - especially the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She also spent many hours sitting between the infamous library lions dreaming up the kinds of books she wanted to create. Now she happily lives in Los Angeles with two Anubis-y looking dogs in a house lined with books instead of wallpaper. Jodi Baker loves writing & reading Young Adult Urban Fantasy Mythological stories tinged with romance. In addition to her young adult BETWEEN LIONS series, Jodi is also working on a middle-grade fiction fantasy series.

TRUST is her first book.
