Ziggy Stardust & Me was so phenomenal, but the subject matter that surrounded the story -- the discrimination, dehumanization, and the abuse against the LGBT+ and Native American communities -- really frustrated me and broke my heart. It's such an important novel.

2. Favorite review that you wrote in 2019?

2019 was a terrible blogging year for me. I was so focused on doing well in school that LTBN had to go on the back burner until I made it through. However, I really love my review for Circe.

3. Best discussion/non-review post you had on your blog?

I wrote this blog post for a class, but I'm really happy with how it turned out. {click here to read}

4. Best event that you participated in (author signings, festivals, virtual events, memes, etc.)?

I actually got to go to quite a few events this year. I loved them all! Madeline Miller, Rainbow Rowell, Tomi Adeyemi, and Delia Owens were all so lovely to meet. 5. Best moment of bookish/blogging life in 2019?

I think that the best part of being a blogger and a reader this year was being able to easily meet and discuss writing with my faves. I managed to make a lovely connection with Helen Hoang and she signed my books for me via USPS, I got to thank Tomi Adeyemi for inspiring me to write and to keep working hard on my own stories, I've been able to speak with some new faves on Twitter (Joanna Ruth Meyer and more) and Instagram (Adrienne Young and more), and I've was able to emotionally ramble at Rainbow Rowell for writing Fangirl. I won't go into the details completely, but she was incredibly kind and gave me a Carry On themed bookplate to stick in my copy of Wayward Son in October. She is such a kind and wonderful human.

6. Most challenging thing about blogging or your reading life this year?

It was so incredibly hard to maintain this blog while working 2 on-campus jobs and being a full-time student. Obviously, as I said before, I had to put it on the back-burner and I didn't get to put out a lot of content that I loved. I missed blogging so much, but I'm getting back in the swing of it!

7.  Did you complete any reading challenges or goals that you had set for yourself at the beginning of this year?

My goals for 2019 were: 

1. Read for you. You only live once and you shouldn't waste your time on books you don't enjoy.
2. Do well in school. Priorities should be in place. 
3. Continue with the book club. Push through the laziness.
4. Read more with others. 
5. Utilize the library more.
6. Make a dent in your physical TBR! Read the books you own before purchasing more and more! 

Goal #1: I definitely didn't waste my time on books I wasn't interested in. 2019 was the year for unhauling, regifting, and donating books. I often found myself just reading the first few pages to see if I was interested in the premise and the writing style and if I wasn't interested, I didn't continue it. 

Goal #2: I definitely focused on school more than blogging. I did very well in 2019 and I'm track to graduate in May. Only 2 more classes this last semester and I'll be an undergraduate grad!

Goal #3: We definitely continued the book club too! We were quite busy, but I found a new way I liked to help run the Instagram page and the books were phenomenal.

Goal #4: I was a part of a lot of buddy reads during the beginning and middle of the year, but when the end of the year hit, all of my friends were really busy and I was really busy, so we didn't do many in the fall/winter.

Goal #5: I for sure did this too. I read a good 90% of my graphic novels and comics from Hoopla -- as well as the audiobooks I was able to read. 

Goal #6: I'd like to think that I made a dent, but it's still large. This will be pushed into 2020. 

Looking Ahead:

1. One Book You Didn’t Get To In 2019 But Will Be Your Number 1 Priority in 2020?

Of all of the anticipated 2019 releases that I posted in December of 2017, I had managed to read 11/21, 2 weren't published, 1 was DNF'd, and 7 I didn't get a chance to read. I'm hoping to complete the list of books that I hadn't read:

• Famous In A Small Town by Emma Mills
• Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon
• Children of Virtue and Vengeance (publishing date pushed back to December)
• We Hunt the Flame by Hafsah Faizal
• Apollo #4 by Rick Riordan  (I'm behind on the entire series)
• Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo
• Wayward Son by Rainbow Rowell

My goal is to finish them all this year + the 20ish 2020 releases that I'm very excited for. 

2. A Book You Are Most Anticipating For 2020 (non-debut)?

Who's surprised, but I'm so freaking excited for Sarah J. Maas' House of Earth and Blood. I desperately need it right now. I'm also very excited for Emma Mills' Lucky Caller,  Brigid Kemmerer's A Heart So Fierce and Broken, Helen Hoang's The Heart Principle, and Kiera Cass' The Betrothed. 

4. Series Ending/A Sequel You Are Most Anticipating in 2020?

I'm too excited for the Hunger Games prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, but I'm also mega nervous. I hope it isn't horrid.

5. Did I Accomplish My Goals from 2019 Going into 2020?

I did, but I didn't. 2019 was a very hard year, but I had a good time.

6. Goals for 2020

• Read 100(+) books.
• Read the thicker books that have been making me nervous.
• Quit focusing on the # of books that I read and focus on pursuing the books that I know I'll really enjoy.
• Finish the series I've been putting off/catch up on the series I've put on hold.
• Read more adult fiction - fantasy, contemporary, romance, literary, etc.
• Keep unhauling/DNFing/regifting books.

Goals for Book-Buying:

• I am keeping my Book of the Month subscription, but I will only be getting 1-2 books a month. The second book will only be included if it is in my list of 2020 releases that I'm desperately excited about. Granted, I may find that I'm desperate for more books that are announced later this year, but you can follow that excitement on Instagram because I'm bound to scream about them on my stories.
• If I can afford it that month, I'm limiting myself to 2 books a month. I won't be paying full price and I'm going to practice self-restraint and patience. I don't need all the books ASAP, so I just need to be patient because I rarely read them right away.
• I should only have 4 books total that I have purchased in a month. Of course, I'll accept review books and trade books, but I don't need to buy more than 2 books a month because that's silly. I probably won't buy many anyway. 
• I probably won't get any more special edition boxes from FaeCrate/BaeCrate/Owlcrate this year because I need to save up to move out.

7. A 2020 Release You’ve Already Read & Recommend To Everyone (if applicable):

The only new release that I've read is Dewdrop by Katie O'Neill, but I plan on reading Fable by Adrienne Young and Beyond the Shadowed Earth by Joanna Meyer in January.

February 2019 Reading Wrap Up + My Current Reads!

This past month has been sooo freaking busy. I'm so sorry that I haven't been updating you all. I'm finding that the junior years of high school and college are definitely the hardest years so far. I've managed to read much more than I anticipated and the books that I did read were so fantastic! Here are the books that I read this month (+mini reviews - for now!)

A Curse So Dark & Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer

~ 5 stars ~

      I had the pleasure of reading this book a week early, but I became so busy that I was unable to read it completely beforehand. I managed to finish the book the day after it was published and WOW-OH-WOW! I was so pleased with this book. It's definitely a new favorite and I'm unashamed to say that I bought two more of Brigid's books this month post-Curse. This book was the perfect blend of diversity, a new fantastical world, alternate universe crossing, romance, friendship, action, retelling elements, and immersive writing. I love this book so fracking much. I'm honestly still not sure how to describe why I love it so much. I'm still collecting my thoughts and I honestly want to reread the novel so that I can read a finished copy. I cannot wait for A Heart So Fierce & Broken. I already know it's going to be epic and beautiful. Bring it on, Brigid!

Bloom by Kevin Panetta & Savanna Ganucheau

~ 5 stars ~

       Another beautifully written story that I cannot get enough of. This book is also a new favorite that I instantly bought soon after reading it. I had been eagerly yet quietly anticipating this book for a month now and when one of the librarians pointed out the new graphic novels in our collection, I had to read it ASAP. I procrastinated my homework and binge-read the first 3/4 before the library closed and basically swallowed the last 1/4 after I got home. This story is just so beautiful, sweet, and wholesome. I absolutely love Ari and Hector. They are the soft, beautiful baking boys of my heart. I cannot wait to read more from Kevin and Savanna. This graphic novel deserves all of the stars!

Bingo Love Volume 1: Jackpot Edition by Tee Franklin, Marguerite Bennett, Gail Simone, Shawn Pryor, Jenn St. Onge, Sara Alfageeh, Paulina Ganucheau, Beverly Johnson, and Ariela Kristantina

~ 4 stars ~

I also picked this beautiful book up from my university's library (along with Be Prepared and Bloom). I've been eyeing this story since it came to our shelves and I am so glad that I read this lovely story. The story of Hazel and Mari is so beautiful, inspiring, and heartwrenching. I am, for real, so blessed to have read this book. This book follows Hazel and Mari as they fall in love in the 1960s, but are driven apart by the hands of their conservative families. Decades later, they find each other again and realize that their love is still very much alive. They take control of their lives and live the rest of their lives together. The journeys that these women face is so eye-opening and inspiring. This graphic novel needs to go viral and get into the hands of anyone and everyone. 

Be Prepared by Vera Brosgol

~ 3 stars ~

     I've been following Vera as an artist for a hot minute, but I have never really read any of her published work. I'll see clips or bits and pieces online, but I've never really picked up her work before Be Prepared. One of her other graphic novels, Anya's Ghost, was very popular when it first came out in 2011, but I haven't picked that one up either (I will soon, though because it's at the library!). Be Prepared follows Vera in a semi-autobiographical story about how she goes to a Russian summer camp. Throughout the story, Vera is trying to make friends, find herself in her culture, and to learn more about herself as a person. Though I enjoyed this story, I really didn't connect with Vera like I would have hoped. Maybe it's because I'm not nine or Russian, but I just didn't like her that much. I just didn't think there was a hopeful message at the end. It just fell flat. However, I really did enjoy the story, the illustrations, and color schemes. This is perfect for younger readers. I just didn't connect as much as I thought I would. 

Radio Silence by Alice Oseman

~ 5 stars ~

Another new favorite contemporary! February has been a fantastic month for finding new faves. It's crazy how much I enjoyed Radio Silence. I started listening to this glorious book via Hoopla over a weekend and I could not put this book down! Not only was the audio narrator fantastic (Aysha Kala), the story was absolutely enthralling. I absolutely love the characters, their stories, the diversity, the whole vibe...everything was perfect! There was never a dull moment in this book. I've never really chosen to lay in bed and finish an audiobook, but I stayed up til 2am to finish this one. This book was everything I could have asked for. I need more Alice Oseman! I recommend this book to everyone! It has everything you could want: platonic boy/girl relationships, beautiful soft boys, diverse characters, a podcast with fantasy/dystopia elements, different social media, road trips, school drama, mystery, and more! This book is too wonderful to explain. I wish I had more. I need more!

The Bride Test by Helen Hoang

~ 4.5 stars ~

This book was everything I could have hoped for. Not only was it just as deliciously romantic as The Kiss Quotient, the characters were also just so engaging and the plot was just so wonderfully done. I had the pleasure of reading and e-ARC from NetGalley and this book just made me sooo excited for more work from Helen Hoang. I absolutely adore her writing style, her methods of characterization, and the way she develops relationships and incorporates diverse characters and topics. I cannot wait to read the next book in this little universe. I was so thrilled to have gotten to see Stella and Michael in this book too. Their little cameo was perfect and I literally yelled when I realized that it was them. Ugh, I love Helen's characters. I cannot wait to get my hands on my preordered finished copy.

Roomies by Christina Lauren

As I am typing up this blog post, I'm pretty positive that I'm going to be finishing this book after I finish writing up my wrap up and book haul. This book is so much fun. I love the writing style of the authors. Their dialogue is so funny and the premises of their books are so ridiculous, but so well executed and addicting to read. I love love love Holland and Calvin's personalities. They absolutely crack me up. I cannot wait to see how the second half of this book will go. I honestly hope that I cry.

I'm currently 40% through this book.

Echo North by Joanna Ruth Meyer

This book is also SO GOOD! Joanna's writing style is so beautiful and I cannot wait to see how this book turns out. I've been putting off finishing this book because I don't want it to end. I love the elements that she's taken from Russian folklore and culture and the basic bits from the legend of East O' the Sun West O' the Moon. It's probably tied with Beauty and the Beast as my favorite fairy tale/folk story. I cannot wait to pick up Joanna's other book, Beneath the Haunting Sea. Joanna pitches it as "Jane Eyre meets The Silmarillion" I think I need that in my life! Yes, please!

I'm currently 60% through this book.

Solitaire by Alice Oseman

I quickly picked started this audiobook after listening to Radio Silence, hoping for a story that was just as engaging and entertaining as RD. Unfortunately, Solitaire isn't as good as RD, but I'm still quite enjoying it. I'm not sure how I like the main character, Tori, or the audio narrator; but I really enjoy the side characters and the mystery of the plot. I'm eager to pick up more of Oseman's work after this. I love her writing style and characterization techniques. 

I'm currently 36% through this book.

2019 Reading Wrap Up

Hey, guys!

It's that time of the year! I know that a lot of you enjoy these massive conglomerate posts where I list every book, but if you're interested in my full thoughts and feelings surrounding each book, please check out the monthly wrap up listed below each month's list. I'm so happy with my reading choices. Surprisingly, this year was the worst for blogging (Hooray for being a senior in college!), but I was able to stress read so many books too. I've read the most I've ever read and I even broke my reading record of 138 from 2015. 

This year, I was able to read 153 books, graphic novels, comics, short stories, and essay collections. I'm so jazzed to share all of these books with you! 

**Full disclosure, I've also had a wonderful year of unhauling, donating, and gifting books. When it comes to keeping the books I didn't really enjoy -- I don't. If the book is going to take up space on my shelves and I don't plan on reading them again, I give it to one of my friends, trade it online for another book I'm interested in, I donate it to book drives/used bookstores/etc., or I just donate them to Goodwill if no one will take them. 

I also did not read as many books as I acquired this year. That goal will be addressed in another future post that will discuss my bookish goals for 2020.
