Back in December, my boyfriend and I decided to start the new Marvel show, Runaways, on Hulu. We automatically were hooked to the awesome story that was being told. Because of this, we had a genuine interest in reading the comics and fully understanding the original Runaways storyline. Soon after Christmas, we went book shopping and managed to be sucked into the comics and graphic novel section of our local Books-A-Million. We actually managed to find the first few single issues of the newest Runaways comic series by Rainbow Rowell and Kris Anka. I was, personally, hooked. Since December, I've read a few more of the single issues that have been put out and I've picked up the first two massive volumes of Brian K. Vaughan's adaptation of the Runaways.

     I'm not going to individually review every single volume of this series, but I'm just going to say that I absolutely love it. Kris Anka has perfectly captured the essence of the Runaways and Rainbow Rowell has, once again, stolen my heart with her writing. She is a beautiful wordsmith from above. I just love basically everything she writes. I cannot wait to continue on with this awesome story. I wish I had money to buy all of the rest of the single issues, and the larger compiled volumes, and the eventual massive ultra volume bind-ups. I'm that extra. 

I highly recommend this series if you love Marvel, kids with superpowers, and action-packed stories.

     Back in December, my boyfriend's lovely family gifted me this book for Christmas. I was so excited to read the stories and be re-immersed into the Grisha world. This book totally lived up to the hype and my expectations. The stories were fantastic, the writing was A+ as always, the illustrations were stunning, and the book itself was just amazing. I love these stories so much. I couldn't find anything that I didn't like about this book. It was just straight-up awesome. Cue the excessive gushing and lack of critical analysis. 

     This book was just gorgeous! I'm so in love with the stories that Leigh Bardugo created for this world. Each story was so hauntingly beautiful and the language and imagery that they created were just so imaginative and stunning. I'm so pleased with both the physical look of the book and the actual content itself. The illustrations throughout the book were just so intricately done and the detail that went into their making is just astoundingly beautiful and perfectly reflected the stories and their spooky vibes. Each story was intricately crafted in a way that left you desperately wanting more, yet still satisfied with how their ending was summed up. 

      Each story in this Grisha anthology is inspired by common known and lesser known fairy tales, myths, and folklore. The five stories each represent the five areas/countries in the Grisha universe. The stories are such a fantastic representation of the Grisha world. Each story adds more to the world building and reveals a more in depth look at the history of the world.

     This book was sent to me by KCP Loft for an honest review. All opinions are my own. Thank you, KCP Loft, for sending me this book. 

      When first starting this book, I had no idea how much mental health would play into this story. I thought this would be a cutesy and artsy little contemporary that follows fun musicians as they fall in love in New York. This was not the fluffy romance that I anticipated. I was actually hoping to get some Your Lie in April vibes, but oh my gosh I got the heavier end of that stick. This book was much heavier and I really did not know what I was going into when I started this book. After reading this, I had one of my friends read this book to see if my opinions were just insensitive or something, but she thinks that my feelings are valid and her thoughts on this book really helped me put the events of the book into perspective. 

     Initially, I really did not like this book all that much. I thought the characters were obnoxious and annoying. I thought that Dom was kind of fake and manipulative and I thought that Ben was pretentious and crazy. After reading the book, I realize that those generalizations were flawed and close-minded. I was being bitter and mean towards a situation that I didn't know much about. Above in the synopsis, it says that the narrators are purposefully unreliable, but I really did not know that, to begin with. I feel like there should have been a way for me to know that they were kind of unreliable going in? Maybe? Then again, not knowing much added to the confusing aspect of the book. Maybe I'm wrong. 

Let's just get into my thoughts.

    Let's talk about the characters. At first, I really liked Dom. I thought she had an interesting perspective and I liked that she was a kind of underdog that could represent those who have to work really hard to move up in life. I thought that would be a great message to incorporate into YA. She and her mom's situation was so raw and real. I really loved their initial dynamic. Not to mention, Dom and her friend Cass' friendship. I loved Cass. He was probably the best character in the book. I adored him. I'd read a book all about Cass if I could. Overall, Dom had the potential to be a fantastic character. She's smart, she's beautiful, and she has the capability to be so much more than she is....but then she started lying...about everything. I just could not get behind it. 

    Ben was an even bigger piece of work. He could have been so sweet and romantic, but he became obsessive and strange and intense. Dom didn't see it. She was so caught up in the romanticism of it instead of following her instincts. He started to get scary and his behavior literally made me sit at the edge of my seat and actively worry about his and Dom's well being. After reading the last few chapters of the book, we find out why he's acting the way he is, but while reading the events as they were happening I was getting so mad at him for what he was doing. He wasn't taking care of himself, he was constantly lying and being mean to his family and friends and classmates. He was being super sketchy and weird. I just didn't like him. After reading the last bits of the book, I just worried about him. I wouldn't wish that kind of mania on anyone. It's not that I pity him, it's that I can empathize with him. I feel like he and Dom are actual people. 

     These characters have left a mark on me. I didn't like the book very much, but boy do I appreciate the message and representation. This was a beautifully written debut. Champion did a great job at representing these teens. They were so real and...annoying. I think in the best way. I'm still salty about their recklessness and I don't condone their behavior at all, but wow... it was a ride.

Hey, guys!

     This review is just so long over due. I've literally had no time to write reviews. I feel terrible, but school has had to come first. I'm currently writing this at 1:30 AM on the 24th. I was given this beautiful book for my birthday by my twin sister for our 20th birthday and I was so excited to recieve it. An Enchantment of Ravens was one of my most anticipated 2017 releases. Although this book didn't live up to the hype that I expected, I take full responsibility for that. Sometimes I tend to expect books to be better than they are. Granted, this book was absolutely fantastic and I adored it, but I'm a dork and I expected it to be as fantastic as A Court of Mist and Fury. This standard is unhealthy because I do not think any book can live up to ACOMAF. 

     An Enchantment of Ravens was the last book that I read in 2017. I'm pretty sure I finished it around 10:30 in the evening. I was completely blown away by this book. It was absolutely lovely. The writing style was so beautiful and I'm so enchanted by the story. I desperately wish that this book would have been expanded upon and made into a duology. While I do think that this book was well thought out and the story was beautifully executed, the book lover in me really wanted the book to be much longer. The world that Rogerson created was so gorgeous and I just really really wanted more. 

     There were a couple "issues" that I had with this book, but overall the rest of the book made up for them. First of all, this book kind of deals with some insta-love or insta-attraction, but I really just enjoyed the time that Rook and Isobel spent together. I loved their friendship and I really aggressively shipped them. Rook is such an interesting character. Rook really had some of the best lines in this book. 

“If you must stare at something for hours on end, I’d prefer it to be me alone.”

     Overall, I really do recommend this book if you adore fae stories, gorgeous writing, gorgeous worlds, and a fantastic magic system then I recommend this book. I cannot wait to read what Margaret Rogerson puts out next. She has a fantastic ability for story telling. Her book was magical.

     I was sent Secrets of the Tally for an honest review by the author. All thoughts and opinions are my own. See my review policy for my policy on review copies and DNF'd books.

    The premise of Secrets of the Tally had such promise but I, unfortunately, did not enjoy this book at all. I had quite a few problems with the book, but I really wanted to love it. I'm really disappointed that I did not enjoy this book. I adore Halie Fewkes, her Instagram feed, and her journey to being published is so inspiring. I can only wish her the best in her future endeavors. Unfortunately, her book was just not for me.

     Secrets of the Tally follows Allie who has woken up without any of her memories. She soon realizes that no one really understands her past fully and that she has to rely on her survival skills and intelligence to figure out who she truly is. She finds out that her memories only come to her when she's in true peril, so she has to seek out as much danger as she can.

      I initially started this back in May of 2017, but I really wasn't in the mood for it, so I set it down for a bit. I was starting to get into a slump and I felt like it wouldn't be fair to Fewkes if I read it when I wasn't in the mood. Well, at the end of the year, I was finally in the mood to read the book, but unfortunately, I just didn't like it. I was just really bored throughout the book and I couldn't even get through it. The plot was just so slow and the events were just so predictable or just so random. On top of that, I felt like the characters were really two dimensional and boring. I didn't connect to any of them and they were just so irritating and annoying. 

     There were a few instances where the story got interesting, but within a few pages, it just got boring again. I just could not get behind it. Many of the scenes that happened were just so irrelevant and annoyingly random. The whole plot was just so inconsistent and boring. I really did not enjoy the magic/fantasy element of this story. Within the first half of the book the system wasn't really adequately explained. I was just confused. I originally thought it was going to be really interesting, but I really didn't get anything from it. 

    Overall, I felt like this novel lacked development. I really wanted to love this story, but it wasn't for me. I was just bored and annoyed with the characters and plot. The concept was really intriguing, but this book just fell flat for me.

     I'm not going to get too into detail when discussing this book because I'll just start rambling and fangirling and that doesn't help anyone figure out if they should read this book. Not only that, I have to refrain from spoiling the first 4 books of this series. 

    First of all, I'd just like to say that this book was a roller coaster of emotions all throughout. The relationships and continual world building were just absolutely fantastic. The characters are all just so wonderfully fleshed out and they naturally grow with the series which is so delightful to read. I really loved the dual perspective aspect of this book. It made the story so much more vibrant and well rounded. Each perspective of every character added a kind of depth that I usually don't read in fantasy novels. Maas's writing style and ability is just so wonderful. I adored every bit of this book.

    As I've continued on with this series, I've grown to love these characters like they are my own children. Each one's story is just so rich and different and their personalities are just so fascinating. They clash, they click, and some just cannot get along. That's what I love about these characters. They aren't the typical characters and they aren't perfect at all. Their actions never seem to be written specifically to move the plot along. The events that occur are just perfectly written and the story just flows so nicely. The constant twists and turns and additions to the overall plotline are just so cleverly done. I rarely guess what happens next. 

    This book blew my mind. I finished this book and I was absolutely crushed. Sarah J. Maas always seems to tear me apart with her books...I should just accept it and anticipate it, but I'm always hoping for some semblance of a happy ending...nope! We get a cliffhanger! Every time! I need TOG #7! I need to know what happens to Aelin and Rowan and the gang next! Give me Aelin or give me death! (No. Just kidding...but seriously...I need her back.)

     I'd like to gush about the character and relationship development...just for a bit. Feel free to skip these if you'd like, but Julia hasn't gotten to Empire of Storms, so I'm dying to gush. Each relationship has progressed so naturally and so beautifully. I cannot wait to see where these relationships go. I cannot imagine how everything will be wrapped up in October. 

     Rowan and Aelin grow so much in this book. I just adore how their relationship has blossomed. Their emotional and physical bond is just so inspiring and their vulnerability with one another is magical. I cannot believe how much I love them. I only want what's best for them. I just want them to live happily ever after. If SJM kills them off or kills one of them off in the next book I will break. I'm sure of it. 

     Although Dorian was my least favorite character in this book, I feel like he's growing back into his sassy and strong character. He seemed to kind of fly under the radar in EoS, but I think that is because of his experiences in the previous books. A lot of people have been discussing his rapid character change, but I actually understand how his character has been changing. He's gone through some emotional and physical trauma. He's trying to move past it the best he can. I support him and I hope that he and Manon get together in the end. I think she's good for him. I think they are thoroughly adorable!

On that note...Manon. My queen. The light of the Witch clans. The most badass witch that will ever be (probably). This chick is just so fantastically written. The amount of development that she goes through is so wonderfully done. I cannot wait to see how her character grows in TOG7. I love her developing relationship with the gang, I love her bond with Elide, I love her with Dorian. I love her whole character. I'd definitely read a prequel series about Manon...in fact, I'm sort of demanding it. I need more backstory on Manon!

    Elide. What a strong little cinnamon roll. I love her so much. I cannot wait to see how her character grows. After the trauma that she's gone through, she's shown such immense strength in the face of danger. I love her. I love her. I love her. She is a strong independent and healing woman. She deserves every happiness and all of the answers to her questions. I hope that she and Lorcan get together and are happy. I need that in my life. They are precious. 

    Lorcan. Oh my goodness, his development was probably one of my favorite parts of this book. I love him, I love his character development, I love his loyalty, I love his flaws, I love his bond with Elide, I love how he's questioning his past decisions, and I just want him to be happy. Oh my goodness, the events that went down in the last chunk of the book literally broke me. LORCAN JUST DESERVES ALL OF THE HAPPINESS! 

     Aedion. Oh this man just goes through so much in this book. Mainly emotional, but wow oh wow...He deserves all of the happiness...

      I know I've basically said that they all deserve all of the happiness, but they do! These characters are just so near and dear to my heart. They deserve all of the happiness!

    This book was just absolutely fantastic. I highly recommend this series. If you didn't enjoy the first couple of books and didn't feel the sparks like you anticipated, push through to Heir of Fire and the rest because the amount of depth and dimension in these sequels are just out of this world. 10/10 would recommend forever.

Graphic Novels & Comics Read In 2017

Dragon Ball Z Volume 1 by Akira Toriyama

I really liked this too! Alex is a big DBZ fan and when I found this at Goodwill I knew it would be fun little surprise for him...and then he let me read it. I thought this story was really interesting. Though I don't have time to actually read all of the volumes or watch the show, I know I'd be interested in reading/watching more eventually. 












Jem & the Misfits by Kelly Thompson

I really liked the art style of this comic. I think I'd continue with it if I found the other issues for as cheap as I did this one. I think that the characters could be really cool and I think the way the story was going could be really funny too. 

The Backstagers Act One by James Tynion IV

Of the comics that I bought with my Christmas money, this one was probably one of my top favorites. I really enjoyed the characters, the art style, the story, and the plot. I can't wait to get my hands on more issues. I've been looking for the full first volume for about a week now.

The Runaways (#1-#4) by Rainbow Rowell & Kris Anka

Alex and I have really gotten into the Runaways lately, so I'm really excited to get the next issues purchase the full first volume. I love the story and I love the characters. Rainbow Rowell's writing is phenomenal and the art style is awesome.

This was definitely my favorite of the three volumes I read. I really love how this story is developing. I can't wait to read the rest of the volumes and I can't wait to see where the characters go.












Anne of Green Gables: A Graphic Novel by Mariah Marsden, Erika Kuster, Brenna Thummler, & Kendra Phipps

My Rating: 4.5 stars


I just adore Anne's story. While this illustrated parts of the story beautifully, it wasn't the full book, so don't expect a full graphic novel version of the classic story. This graphic novel was STUNNING! I was absolutely floored by how gorgeous the illustrations were. I'm so glad that this book is a thing. It included almost all of my favorite parts of the original book. I highly recommend this graphic novel if you love Anne of Green Gables!





Nimona by Noelle Stevenson

This is one of my favorite graphic novels and one of my favorite graphic novel artists and writers. I read this back in 2015 and I really really loved it. When I picked up a copy for myself this year, I had to read it again. This is one of my favorite stories and when someone asks for a great graphic novel I, of course, recommend this one. 










Wolf Children: Ame & Yuki by Mamoru Hosoda & Yuu

My Rating: 3 stars

My best friend, Emmie, let me borrow her copy of Wolf Children and it was very interesting. I really like the art style and the length of the book, but the story was very very strange and kind of unsatisfactory. Overall, the story was good, but it wasn't my favorite.
