{Summer BookTube-A-Thon #3} Wrap Up & Day-By-Day Update

Hey, guys!

      This past week was so much fun! I was actually really busy, surprisingly. I wasn't expecting to do much when it came to participating in this readathon, but I actually was pretty active in the Instagram (bookstagram) challenges and I did quite a few reading sprints throughout the week. I couldn't actively do the sprints, but I did some. Last year, I was really into the sprints, but this year I found myself doing the sprints for about 45 minutes and then just binge-reading my books.

     This week I managed to read 6 books. Next year I'll read the seven, but this year it wasn't meant to be. The last couple days of booktubeathon were much busier and I was getting slumpy. I'm actually writing this up Monday afternoon and I'm majorly slumpy. I have two books I'm actively reading and neither are doing it for me. I have another book I'm considering starting, but I have 8 books on my "currently reading" shelf on Goodreads, and that is just excessive. It's time to finish those books!

Saturday:
~I had a pretty eventful Saturday, but not a very good reading day. I spent my day with my lovely boyfriend and the evening with his family at a baseball game. I didn't get much reading done, but I already had 6 books read, so I wasn't worried.

Goodreads synopsis:

Surrounded by enemies, the once-great nation of Ravka has been torn in two by the Shadow Fold, a swath of near impenetrable darkness crawling with monsters who feast on human flesh. Now its fate may rest on the shoulders of one lonely refugee.

Alina Starkov has never been good at anything. But when her regiment is attacked on the Fold and her best friend is brutally injured, Alina reveals a dormant power that saves his life—a power that could be the key to setting her war-ravaged country free. Wrenched from everything she knows, Alina is whisked away to the royal court to be trained as a member of the Grisha, the magical elite led by the mysterious Darkling.

Yet nothing in this lavish world is what it seems. With darkness looming and an entire kingdom depending on her untamed power, Alina will have to confront the secrets of the Grisha . . . and the secrets of her heart.

Shadow and Bone is the first installment in Leigh Bardugo's Grisha Trilogy.

~~~
Hey, guys!
Julia (from @jujuthereader on IG & Twitter aka my best friend) has been recommending and asking me to read this book for the longest time and I've finally gotten to it! This book definitely met and exceeded my expectations. I loved it so much. I flew through it in under 24 hours.
Shadow & Bone was Leigh Bardugo's debut novel in 2012. In the book, Bardugo introduces the world of Ravka, a world that is very loosely based on the Russian culture. In her novel, she introduces Alina Starkov. Alina has never been good at much of anything. When Alina and her best friend, Mal's regiment is attacked, Mal is injured and Alina reveals a power that she was not only unaware of, but a power that could save her country. Alina is whisked away to the capital city to be trained by the Grisha and the Darkling; a mysterious, powerful, and dark Grisha. Alina's personal journey begins as she confronts her past and learns more about her mysterious power.
            Shadow and Bone is such a fantastic introduction to the Grishaverse. Leigh Bardugo has such a fantastic ability to seamlessly create an original world. Her characters are so complex and interesting to read about. Alina is such a great main character. I loved her character arc and I loved seeing how she grew as the book continued. However, I do not like Mal as a character. I think he’s kind of lame and bland. Not because of the way his character was written, but I just don’t like him. I think Alina deserves someone who loves her and appreciates her. I think Mal manipulates her, but don’t hold me to that. It’s only the first book. Also, these are just my first thoughts. I’m probably wrong. I just don’t like him. I might have a prejudice. I’m sorry I’m rambling. Let’s continue on!
            Holy crap the Darkling was so cool. I can’t wait to see what happens in Siege and Storm & Ruin and Rising. I desperately need them. I hate that I decided to go on a book-buying ban. I just want all of Leigh Bardugo’s books. October can’t come fast enough.
            This book’s plot was so intriguing and the pacing was just perfect. It was so intricately done, but not hard to understand. I just loved how Bardugo wrote this book. It was so addicting and I never could tell what would happen next. I read most of the book in one sitting and whenever something happened that I didn’t anticipate, I would literally gasp or say something out loud.
            This book was just so stunning and flawlessly done. Bardugo’s world is so original and unique and I cannot wait to read more. This makes me even more excited to continue with the series. I cannot wait until the new boxset with the new covers is released, because you know I will definitely buy it. I need it in my life.
I need more books like this!
Happy reading!
Goodreads synopsis:
There is a secret organization that cultivates teenage spies. The agents are called Love Interests because getting close to people destined for great power means getting valuable secrets.
Caden is a Nice: the boy next door, sculpted to physical perfection. Dylan is a Bad: the brooding, dark-souled guy who is dangerously handsome. The girl they are competing for is important to the organization, and each boy will pursue her. Will she choose the Nice or the Bad?
Both Caden and Dylan are living in the outside world for the first time. They are well-trained and at the top of their games. They have to be—whoever the girl doesn’t choose will die.
What the boys don’t expect are feelings that are outside of their training. Feelings that could kill them both.
~~~

Hey, guys!

     I received The Love Interest back in the May Book of the Month box. I was so excited about this book because it sounded really quirky and sarcastic. I thought it would be a really cool book to read this summer, however, this book really lets me down. The writing was so juvenile and overly simplistic, the characters lacked any kind of depth, the relationships were unrealistic and lacked chemistry, and the plot was a mess.

     In The Love Interest, the story follows the character Caden, a "Nice". Caden has been trained by a secret organization that specializes in training people to get close to important or potentially important people in order to acquire secrets. Caden has been picked, along with the "Bad" Dylan, to compete for the affections of Juliet, a genius girl from a small town. Whomever Juliet does not choose will be incinerated by the Love Interest Corporation. What Dylan and Caden don't realize, is that they will fall for the person they least expect.

    I know this is a parody or a satirical book. I get that. I was totally on board for the first 30 pages of this book. I loved it. However, this book did not have the quality that I had hoped to read. You can still have a book full of satire and have great writing. This book just was not good. It had the potential to be really hilarious and gripping, but it just was not good. I might just be taking it too seriously, but I just couldn't get past the issues I had with it.

     I found that as I was reading this book, I just wasn't enjoying it. I feel like this book could have been much funnier, much smarter, and could have packed an ironic punch. However, I feel like the author was trying to include too much without having a solid idea. The premise of this book was so promising. I would have loved this book if it had been written by someone else I'm sure. I'm not just saying that either. I think Cale Dietrich will come up with something great one day, but his debut just lacked everything. I'm not sure if that was supposed to be the point, but I believe that if you wanted to use satire to make fun of common YA tropes, then you should have at least written it well. You can be cliché but still, have a great book. That's what I believe anyway. I'm sure many disagree with me.

    Let's discuss what I did not enjoy about this book. I just felt like this book lacked depth. The characters were so boring, they had no personality (Either they were boring or they were annoying. There was no in-between.). The main character lacked any kind of charisma that I thought would come along with his training. He was so boring. His relationship with Juliet was so forced (kind of the point, but even when he wasn't being spoon-fed what to say, he was just so awkward and annoying). His relationship with Juliet's friends was just so -- well, it lacked a connection. He said that they felt like his friends towards the end of the book, but I didn't see it. Not only that, but any kind of interaction with Dylan/Dyl was so annoyingly cringe-y. They had no chemistry whatsoever. Not to mention Dylan's behavior towards the end was just unnecessary. I didn't think that his attitude was okay or appropriate as a plot device. That was just cruel and fake as heck.

      Juliet was just so annoying. She was supposed to be one of the main characters. She was supposed to be a really smart bad-ass chick, but she was just so shallow, annoying, and she rarely acted as if the corporation had made her out to be. The two or three times that she mentioned her workshop and inventions were really out of place, and those qualities that she "showed" were only mentioned to make the plot go further at that time. It was never consistent. Juliet's friends were just as annoying. They were just there!

      I feel like this book could have been written much better. The writing style was much too simplistic. The conversations between the characters were either awkward, messy, unrealistic, or annoying. The conversations did not flow and much too convenient. They always sounded very forced and I just could not imagine their conversations to ever happen in real life. Even though this was a fiction novel, I still have to believe that it could happen. I want to suspend my reality, but this book was just ridiculous.

    I feel like if this book had been written in dual or multiple perspectives, the book would have been much more interesting. Caden was such a dull character and lacked depth. He was just so boring to me. I didn't like him as the main character. I think Dylan would have been cool to read about. He and Juliet would have been great characters to hear from.

    There were only one or two things that I enjoyed about this book. That's probably why it didn't get one star. For one, it was almost entertaining. I did want to know what would happen. I wanted to see where Dietrich was going with his novel. There were a few twists that I didn't see coming, but when they came, I didn't like how they were written. Another thing that I enjoyed was the little depth that we got from Caden. His struggle with his identity - if he really was a "Nice" or if they had made a mistake and that, he was a "Bad" -- really shined. I really liked the inner conflict; however, I really thought it could have been expanded upon. It would have really made the novel interesting. I also really enjoyed the minuscule details that we got about Juliet's inventions. I think that Juliet had the potential to be a proper bad-ass, but instead, she was just annoying.

     I'm really disappointed with this novel. I thought it would be really great, but instead, I think it kind of sucked. Someone else may enjoy this book, but it is definitely not for me.

{Book-Tube-A-Thon 2017} TBR

Hey, guys!

Once again, I'm putting my TBR up really late! It's already 10:45 AM on Day 1 of  booktube-a-thon and I haven't really read anything. I stayed up and read 13 pages for the first sprint, but I've had a long weekend so I needed sleep.

I've been taking part in the BookTube-A-Thon since the summer of 2015, so I'm so excited to do my third summer BTAT! I've been waiting for this all summer! I really want to read 7 books this week, but if I don't get my butt in gear, it won't happen! Today I'm going to type up the two reviews for this week and then I'll get cracking on my reading. I'm so excited to do some sprints tonight!!!

Ariel (from Ariel Bissett) released the challenges a couple weeks ago, so if you'd like to check out the video I'll leave the links you'll need!

Here's My TBR!

1/ Read a book with a person on the cover.

The Fangirl's Guide to the Galaxy: A Handbook for Girl Geeks by Sam Maggs

I started this on a whim when I got it on Saturday. I think it will be super cute and a bit informative too.

2/ Read a hyped book.

Red Rising by Pierce Brown

This book is raved about by Tasha from Tashaopolis, so I'm so excited to dive into this one.
15839976

3/ Finish a book in one day.

Winnie-the-Pooh by A.A. Milne

I've been such a fan of A.A. Milne's creation for the longest time...well since birth... and I'm so excited to go back to the world of Winnie-the-Pooh!

235597

4/ Read about a character that is very different from you.

Marlena by Julie Buntin

This book deals with teen consumption of drugs, alcohol, and other dangerous substances; along with teen suicide. I'm interested to see where this book will go.
30199414

5/ Finish a book completely outdoors.

I'm banking on Winnie-the-Pooh to get me through that challenge.

235597

6/ Read a book you bought because of the cover.

I don't usually buy books because of the cover. I'm frugal enough that I buy books because I've either: heard of them and genuinely want to read them, I love the author, it's a part of a series that I plan to read or have yet to finish, or because I've already read it but want a finished copy/my own copy.

I guess I'll have to pick The Ever-Never Handbook by Soman Chainani. It has all of the qualities that I've mentioned above (I love the series and author, I wanted to read it, it's a part of the SFG&E series, and I wanted to read it before Quests for Glory came out) not to mention it has a gorgeous cover!

27203016

7/ Read seven books.

All the Feels by Danika Stone

The Demigod Diaries by Rick Riordan

I picked All the Feels because I'm always down for a contemporary, a nerdy protagonist, and a fandom fueled plot. I'm so excited for this book. The main character's name is Liv!!!!

I picked The Demigod Diaries because I love Rick Riordan, I've been needing to read this, it's short, and there's a short story by his son Haley. I just need this in my life. Maybe this will convince me to do a reread of the series. I really want to read and discuss them with everyone. I need that nostalgia!

I'm so excited to dive into these! Join me on Twitter to do some reading sprints this week!

Happy reading!

{Review} When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon

My Rating: 4 stars

Goodreads synopsis:

Dimple Shah has it all figured out. With graduation behind her, she’s more than ready for a break from her family, from Mamma’s inexplicable obsession with her finding the “Ideal Indian Husband.” Ugh. Dimple knows they must respect her principles on some level, though. If they truly believed she needed a husband right now, they wouldn’t have paid for her to attend a summer program for aspiring web developers…right?

Rishi Patel is a hopeless romantic. So when his parents tell him that his future wife will be attending the same summer program as him—wherein he’ll have to woo her—he’s totally on board. Because as silly as it sounds to most people in his life, Rishi wants to be arranged, believes in the power of tradition, stability, and being a part of something much bigger than himself.
The Shahs and Patels didn’t mean to start turning the wheels on this “suggested arrangement” so early in their children’s lives, but when they noticed them both gravitate toward the same summer program, they figured, Why not?
Dimple and Rishi may think they have each other figured out. But when opposites clash, love works hard to prove itself in the most unexpected ways.

~~~
Hey, guys!
     I, of course, had to pick this book up! I've been meaning to acquire this book for the longest time, but there weren't many copies whenever I went to my local Books A Million. Everyone has snatched it up! I don't blame them either! This book was so entertaining and adorable! The diversity and Indian representation was so great to read and I'm so glad that this book was published. However, this book suffered from an annoying main character, so that was why I didn't give it the full 5 stars. I just really didn't enjoy her character.
     Dimple Shah is basically the opposite of what her mother wants her to be. Dimple is a head strong and independent Indian young woman who desperately wants to pursue a career in web development. When she's accepted to Stanford for the fall term, Dimple can only dream that her parents would send her to Insomnia Con that summer. Insomnia Con is a huge summer program for incoming freshman who are pursuing web development. Dimple miraculously is allowed to go and then she abruptly meets a boy...Rishi Patel. The sweetest cinnamon roll I've ever read about. Apparently, Dimple and Rishi are expected to eventually get married...Dimple is not a fan. Shenanigans ensue and drama occurs. This book is so adorable. I have my issues with it, but I'm totally impressed.
      The diversity and culture were so amazing! I haven't read enough diverse books in my life, so I'm so glad that I read this book. It is such a great window into a culture that I'm not as familiar with. I just adored the whole concept of this book.
     I really did enjoy Dimple's character 50% of the time, but for a good chunk of the time, she got pretty annoying when it came to Rishi. There wasn't exactly insta-love, but their relationship developed a bit too quickly for my taste. I also didn't like that once she and Rishi started to actively hang out, any mention of the app contest became an after thought. She was so complex and independent in the beginning of the book. but I felt like she lacked something once the middle hit. I had really hoped for her independence and passion for web development to shine through. She was also really rude to everyone. Half the time I felt like she had an "I'm too cool for everyone" vibe which got on my nerves. She just kind of made assumptions about people and went with it. Granted, the majority of the time her assumptions were accurate, but she was just so rude! However, her sassy character was really appreciated for the majority of the time. I really loved her spunk.
      Rishi was such a sweet character. What a cutie. What a precious cinnamon roll! At first, I didn't like him as much because of how complacent he was, but as the book continued he really grew on me. I really admire his passion for his traditions and culture. Of the pair, I think Rishi was my favorite. He was just a really genuine and real guy! His character development was precious to read and I just loved him so much! His conflict and worries were so real and I don't think that they are confined to his Indian heritage. I think it is a very real and relatable issue for youths today.
“This is our life. We get to decide the rules. We get to say what goes and what stays, what matters and what doesn’t.”
(literally one of my favorite quotes from this book)
      I was so stoked for the web development aspect to this book. I was so ready to get behind Dimple's passion and love for this task! But unfortunately, I felt like the romance overshadowed her passion and actual desire to go into this field. I loved the parts where Dimple and Rishi actually planned out the app and discussed what they were planning, but then the romance just took over.
      I loved how Menon tackled the subject of entitlement and privilege. There was a group of d-bags that really got on my nerves, got on Dimple's nerves, got on Rishi's nerves...okay basically they were the worst entitled buttholes ever. They were also a more diverse group of buttholes. Idiotic people come in all colors and from every background. I really appreciated that rich white heterosexual males weren't the only group called out for being dumb sometimes. Peer pressure was also a prominent theme in this book. I really appreciated that that was tackled as well.
      I also really enjoyed Dimple's family dynamic. I felt like Dimple was super harsh towards her mother for a good majority of the book, but their growth was really great to see how their relationship changed. Dimple's dad was the cutest. I loved how he communicated and supported his daughter even when she was really internally ungrateful. Their family was really interesting to read about.
     Celia was a really interesting character, however, I felt like her character shifted really abruptly once she got into the "cool group" and then changed abruptly again towards the end. I feel like a real friendship between Celia and Dimple lacked throughout the book. I enjoyed how she dealt with peer pressure. It's really unfortunate that girls have to feel the way Celia and Isabelle had to fit in.
     Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I'm not sure if my review reflected that, but I really did enjoy this book. It was super cute and I definitely plan on reading Sandhya's future books. I need more of her writing in my life. It was such a joy to read. I definitely recommend that you read this book. It's so sweet.
Series I Need To Finish {#1}
Hey, guys!
    If you've been following my blog for a while you probably know that I'm sometimes a total flake when it comes to finishing series. Either I just take too long or I just wait so long that I'm out of the loop. It can be very daunting, but I persevere. There are so many series and books that everyone loves that I just haven't picked up yet. I decided to share with you all my progress for some series that I need to finish. There are far too many and I plan on finishing up the completed series really soon. I can't help the active series, but I do need to catch up. Here are
1/ The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare
    • I'm about halfway through the third book, City of Glass, and I had to put it down during a time where I didn't want to get slumpy. I wasn't in the mood and I think there was another book that appealed to me much more at that time. I plan on continuing with the series really soon.
2/ The Infernal Devices trilogy by Cassandra Clare
    • I started this series a long time ago at my library, but the books were always checked out so I didn't have a chance to continue. I plan on reading this trilogy really soon too. There's a specific reading order recommended on Clare's website, so I'll probably be reading them between chunks of TMI.
infernal-devices-covers1
3/ The Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas
    • I'm currently waiting to binge read the next three books in this series, but I'm just so scared that I won't have any more Sarah J. Maas books for a while. I recently bought a signed copy of Empire of Storms, so I'm even more hyped to read the series. I'm such a huge fan of the ACOTAR series, so I hope this series is just as good.
Image result for throne of glass series
4/ The Red Queen series by Victoria Aveyard
    • I read Red Queen & Cruel Crown when they first came out, but I haven't continued to keep up with the releases of book 2 and 3. I've recently bought book 2, but I haven't read it yet. I'd probably have to reread Red Queen, so that will probably happen soon. I really enjoyed RQ when it first came out.
5/ The Six of Crows Duology by Leigh Bardugo
    • SOC was one of the LivTheBookClub book of the months, last summer so I can't wait to read Crooked Kingdom. I'm kind of scared. So many people have said that it totally broke them....Julia and I are probably going to buddy read it this summer. Stay tuned!
Image result for six of crows
6/ The Anne of Green Gables series by L.M. Montgomery
    • I binge-read this series a couple years ago, but the library took forever to get the fifth book in, so I just didn't get to finish it. I have books 1-7 on my shelf, so I hope that I get to them soon. I love the series so much.
      • I need to reread these, so I don't have any reviews for these up on my blog.
7/ The Dorothy Must Die series by Danielle Paige
    • I'm waiting for Yellow Brick War and The End of Oz to come out in paperback. Those are the only reasons that I haven't picked up the most recent book. I'm not sure if I'll read the novellas. Comment below if I should.
8/ The Girl Online series by Zoe Sugg
    • There's no excuse for this series. I've got the third book, but I just haven't picked it up yet. I'll hopefully get back into the series later this summer.
9/ The Ouran High School Host Club manga series by Bisco Hatori
    • I adore this manga and anime series. I've actually watched the anime at least 5 times and I've read the first volume of the manga series. I found the series cheap on Amazon and I'll probably splurge and buy it sometime at the end of the year if I can.
10/ The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer
    • I absolutely love this series! Unfortunately I haven't picked up or finished Fairest or Stars Above, so I'm kind of behind on that. I plan on picking them up really soon. I'm excited to get into Levana's head and see what happens after Winter. I love Meyer's story and characters so much, so I'm not sure why I haven't just finished the series.
          • (I'm not sure why I haven't reviewed Cinder and Scarlet, but they both got 5-star ratings!)
These series are so great, so I can't wait to finish them all! Comment below your favorite and maybe I'll put it on the top of my TBR!
Happy reading!
