 30. Book That Made You The Most Mad (doesn’t necessarily mean you didn’t like it)?

 Ziggy Stardust & Me was so phenomenal, but the subject matter that surrounded the story -- the discrimination, dehumanization, and the abuse against the LGBT+ and Native American communities -- really frustrated me and broke my heart. It's such an important novel.

1. New favorite book blog you discovered in 2019?

 My bestie, Lauren, has the best blog! {click here}

 2. Favorite review that you wrote in 2019?

 2019 was a terrible blogging year for me. I was so focused on doing well in school that LTBN had to go on the back burner until I made it through. However, I really love my review for Circe.

 3. Best discussion/non-review post you had on your blog?

 I wrote this blog post for a class, but I'm really happy with how it turned out. {click here to read}

 4. Best event that you participated in (author signings, festivals, virtual events, memes, etc.)?

I actually got to go to quite a few events this year. I loved them all! Madeline Miller, Rainbow Rowell, Tomi Adeyemi, and Delia Owens were all so lovely to meet. 5. Best moment of bookish/blogging life in 2019?

 I think that the best part of being a blogger and a reader this year was being able to easily meet and discuss writing with my faves. I managed to make a lovely connection with Helen Hoang and she signed my books for me via USPS, I got to thank Tomi Adeyemi for inspiring me to write and to keep working hard on my own stories, I've been able to speak with some new faves on Twitter (Joanna Ruth Meyer and more) and Instagram (Adrienne Young and more), and I've was able to emotionally ramble at Rainbow Rowell for writing Fangirl. I won't go into the details completely, but she was incredibly kind and gave me a Carry On themed bookplate to stick in my copy of Wayward Son in October. She is such a kind and wonderful human.

 6. Most challenging thing about blogging or your reading life this year?

 It was so incredibly hard to maintain this blog while working 2 on-campus jobs and being a full-time student. Obviously, as I said before, I had to put it on the back-burner and I didn't get to put out a lot of content that I loved. I missed blogging so much, but I'm getting back in the swing of it!

7.  Did you complete any reading challenges or goals that you had set for yourself at the beginning of this year?

 My goals for 2019 were: 
  1. Read for you. You only live once and you shouldn't waste your time on books you don't enjoy.
  2. Do well in school. Priorities should be in place. 
  3. Continue with the book club. Push through the laziness.
  4. Read more with others. 
  5. Utilize the library more.
  6. Make a dent in your physical TBR! Read the books you own before purchasing more and more! 
Goal #1: I definitely didn't waste my time on books I wasn't interested in. 2019 was the year for unhauling, regifting, and donating books. I often found myself just reading the first few pages to see if I was interested in the premise and the writing style and if I wasn't interested, I didn't continue it. 
Goal #2: I definitely focused on school more than blogging. I did very well in 2019 and I'm track to graduate in May. Only 2 more classes this last semester and I'll be an undergraduate grad!
Goal #3: We definitely continued the book club too! We were quite busy, but I found a new way I liked to help run the Instagram page and the books were phenomenal.
Goal #4: I was a part of a lot of buddy reads during the beginning and middle of the year, but when the end of the year hit, all of my friends were really busy and I was really busy, so we didn't do many in the fall/winter.
Goal #5: I for sure did this too. I read a good 90% of my graphic novels and comics from Hoopla -- as well as the audiobooks I was able to read. 
Goal #6: I'd like to think that I made a dent, but it's still large. This will be pushed into 2020. 

Looking Ahead:

1. One Book You Didn’t Get To In 2019 But Will Be Your Number 1 Priority in 2020?

 Of all of the anticipated 2019 releases that I posted in December of 2017, I had managed to read 11/21, 2 weren't published, 1 was DNF'd, and 7 I didn't get a chance to read. I'm hoping to complete the list of books that I hadn't read:

  • Famous In A Small Town by Emma Mills
  • Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon
  • Children of Virtue and Vengeance (publishing date pushed back to December)
  • We Hunt the Flame by Hafsah Faizal
  • Apollo #4 by Rick Riordan  (I'm behind on the entire series)
  • Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo
  • Wayward Son by Rainbow Rowell
My goal is to finish them all this year + the 20ish 2020 releases that I'm very excited for. 


 2. A Book You Are Most Anticipating For 2020 (non-debut)?

 Who's surprised, but I'm so freaking excited for Sarah J. Maas' House of Earth and Blood. I desperately need it right now. I'm also very excited for Emma Mills' Lucky Caller,  Brigid Kemmerer's A Heart So Fierce and Broken, Helen Hoang's The Heart Principle, and Kiera Cass' The Betrothed. 

 4. Series Ending/A Sequel You Are Most Anticipating in 2020?

 I'm too excited for the Hunger Games prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, but I'm also mega nervous. I hope it isn't horrid.

 5. Did I Accomplish My Goals from 2019 Going into 2020?

 I did, but I didn't. 2019 was a very hard year, but I had a good time.

 6. Goals for 2020
  • Read 100(+) books.
  • Read the thicker books that have been making me nervous.
  • Quit focusing on the # of books that I read and focus on pursuing the books that I know I'll really enjoy.
  • Finish the series I've been putting off/catch up on the series I've put on hold.
  • Read more adult fiction - fantasy, contemporary, romance, literary, etc.
  • Keep unhauling/DNFing/regifting books.
Goals for Book-Buying:
  • I am keeping my Book of the Month subscription, but I will only be getting 1-2 books a month. The second book will only be included if it is in my list of 2020 releases that I'm desperately excited about. Granted, I may find that I'm desperate for more books that are announced later this year, but you can follow that excitement on Instagram because I'm bound to scream about them on my stories.
  • If I can afford it that month, I'm limiting myself to 2 books a month. I won't be paying full price and I'm going to practice self-restraint and patience. I don't need all the books ASAP, so I just need to be patient because I rarely read them right away.
  • I should only have 4 books total that I have purchased in a month. Of course, I'll accept review books and trade books, but I don't need to buy more than 2 books a month because that's silly. I probably won't buy many anyway. 
  • I probably won't get any more special edition boxes from FaeCrate/BaeCrate/Owlcrate this year because I need to save up to move out.

 7. A 2020 Release You’ve Already Read & Recommend To Everyone (if applicable):

 The only new release that I've read is Dewdrop by Katie O'Neill, but I plan on reading Fable by Adrienne Young and Beyond the Shadowed Earth by Joanna Meyer in January.

Top 19 of 2019 Reads


Hey, guys!

 This year has been such a great reading year. I read over 150 books and managed to read a wider variety of books compared to some of the past years. This year was a year of rereads, adult fantasy, and branching out. I'm so happy with what I read, but I cannot wait to dive into more books in 2020. 

 I didn't think I'd actually have 19 favorites from 2019, but when compiling these books, I instantly picked out 19. I also have some fantastic runner ups, so stay tuned for those too! 

 Here are my top 19 reads from 2019!
Full disclosure. Discussing my favorite books tends to result in cookie-cutter gushes. I just adore these books and sometimes it's much easier to hate a book than love it -- or at least it's easier to discuss why I hate/dislike a book than if I absolutely adore it. Please read these books.

 I also do not think I have a #1 favorite from this stack. I'm so passionate about Daisy, Circe, TWK, QON, Curse, and RW&RB that I cannot decide which of them are my favorites. As I type this, I really want to just bold them all because they are all so phenomenal, but I'm reigning myself in. You're welcome. I'll bold those 6 to indicate which of them are my top faves, but please read these books because they are so wonderful and meaningful stories that I hold so dear to my heart.

  1. Circe by Madeline Miller 
    • 5 stars
    • This book has just stuck with me since I read it this summer. The beauty of the prose and the voice of Circe has just stuck with me and I cannot fully explain what this book means to me, but I will try. Not only does this perfectly encapsulate a woman's experience, it perfectly interweaves Greek mythology and introduces a misrepresented and underhyped character. Circe is everything. 
  2. Daisy Jones + The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid
    • 5 stars
    • This book. What a unique and horribly fascinating story. I absolutely love the interview and personal history aspect of the story. The way that Reid weaves the various character's stories together is so genius. I cannot wait to read her next novel and to read the backlisted titles that I didn't get to in 2019. I read this physically, but I definitely recommend the audiobook too. It's probably the best way to do it.
  3. Get A Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert
    • 4.5 stars
    • This was such a fun and diverse sort of romance book. It was quite cheesy and fluffy but had so much substance that made it so freaking original and fun. I love the representation (black girl rep, chronic pain rep, abusive relationship rep) that was throughout this book. It was so well thought out and just so much fun. I listened to this via audiobook and the audiobook narrator was so phenomenal. 
  4. A Curse So Dark & Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer
    • 5 stars
    • This book was such a wonderful fantasy debut from Kemmerer. I love her contemporary fiction, but this really takes the cake. I absolutely adore the magic, the world, the characters, and the conflict. This was just too fun for words and I cannot recommend it enough. I cannot wait for A Heart so Fierce and Broken!
  5. Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson
    • 4.75 stars
    • This was also everything. I absolutely loved the magic system, the magical libraries with the monster books, the tall female protagonist, the bisexual male romantic partner, and a cat-like secretly caring demon servant friend. I just loved everything about this book. Margaret Rogerson can do no wrong.
  6. The Wicked King (Folk of the Air #2) by Holly Black
    • 5 stars
    • This is everything. I died consistently while reading this book. The twist at the end made me so anxious to read QON at the end of the year. A whole year to wait was so agonizing.
  7. The Queen of Nothing (Folk of the Air #3) by Holly Black
    • 5 stars 
    • This was the finale that I needed. I was so freaking impressed. Holly Black also set up some characters to have continued stories and I need it now.
  8. Sky in the Deep by Adrienne Young
    • 4.8 stars
    • This Viking/Scandanavian inspired story was EVERYTHING! I adore Aska and Fiske to the moon and back and I cannot wait to continue reading The Girl the Sea Gave Back and the ARC of Fable that I have. Adrienne Young is an instant new favorite author. I adore her.
  9. Tunnel of Bones by V.E./Victoria Schwab
    • 4.5 stars
    • This was just so fantastic! I adore everything about Victoria Schwab's middle-grade writing. Her magic worlds are so addicting and I cannot wait for book #3 and to read more of her work in 2020.
  10. With the Fire On High by Elizabeth Acevedo
    • 4 stars
    • This was such a wonderfully written novel. I adore Elizabeth Acevedo's writing and her characters so much. I listened to this via audio and I definitely recommend it for your experience. This was such a poignant and important novel. I cried so hard at the end and throughout the story.
  11. Radio Silence by Alice Oseman
    • 5 stars
    • This book was everything I needed. Please read this via audiobook. This is everything you need in a contemporary. 
  12. Nevernight by Jay Kristoff
    • 4.9 stars
    • This book is everything that I needed in a fantasy novel. Not only was it masterfully done, it was smart and full of snark and sass. I cannot wait to continue on with Godsgrave and Darkdawn in 2020. I need it.
  13. Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crowe by Jessica Townsend
    • 4.5 stars
    • This was everything that I needed in a middle-grade fantasy novel. This story and this book series has such a fun conflict and premise and such a wonderfully complex magic system. I love everything about it. I cannot wait for book #3!
  14. Bloom by Kevin Panetta and Savanna Ganucheau
    • 5 stars
    • Such a perfect graphic novel! I adore adore adore this story. I love the baking parts of the story and the wonderful romance that progressed throughout. The art style and the color story throughout is so gorgeous too. It's just so visually stunning. love this so much. 
  15. Check Please! Book 1: #Hockey by Ngozi Ukazu
    • 4.5 stars
    • Another fantastic graphic novel. I absolutely adored this queer romance. I'm not one who is usually into hockey, but I loved the focus on hockey throughout this story. The friendships and the fun banter between the guys was so much fun. I cannot wait for Book 2.
  16. The Bride Test by Helen Hoang 
    • 4.5 stars
    • Helen Hoang is a masterful writer. I cannot yell enough about her skill and my adoration for her stories. I cannot wait for her next book to come out. I'm so glad that I could read an ARC of this book and continue to put out a positive narrative about her stories.
  17. Red, White, and Royal Blue by Casey McQuinston
    • 5 stars
    • How can I gush anymore about this book? It's perfect and I cannot wait to reread it and read more from McQuinston. How can a debut novel be this wonderful?
  18. Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
    • 5 stars
    • This book is such a wonderful examination and study of race and blackness in America. I adore everything about this book. I cannot wait to read more from Adichie. Her writing style is so addicting, quick, and thought-provoking. 
  19. A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E/Victoria Schwab
    • 4.75 stars
    • This was such a unique, dark, and addictingly magical. I cannot wait to read more from this series. I'm obsessed. I'm so upset that I couldn't continue on with the series while I was in school, but I cannot wait to continue the series in January.

2019 Reading Wrap Up

Hey, guys!

 It's that time of the year! I know that a lot of you enjoy these massive conglomerate posts where I list every book, but if you're interested in my full thoughts and feelings surrounding each book, please check out the monthly wrap up listed below each month's list. I'm so happy with my reading choices. Surprisingly, this year was the worst for blogging (Hooray for being a senior in college!), but I was able to stress read so many books too. I've read the most I've ever read and I even broke my reading record of 138 from 2015. 

 This year, I was able to read 153 books, graphic novels, comics, short stories, and essay collections. I'm so jazzed to share all of these books with you! 

**Full disclosure, I've also had a wonderful year of unhauling, donating, and gifting books. When it comes to keeping the books I didn't really enjoy -- I don't. If the book is going to take up space on my shelves and I don't plan on reading them again, I give it to one of my friends, trade it online for another book I'm interested in, I donate it to book drives/used bookstores/etc., or I just donate them to Goodwill if no one will take them. 

 I also did not read as many books as I acquired this year. That goal will be addressed in another future post that will discuss my bookish goals for 2020.
