January 2022 Reading Wrap-Up

Happy Saturday, all!

This week a snowstorm rolled into my area and Alex and I were snowed in for basically an entire week. Since I squish in my 40 hours of work into Monday through Thursday, my normal three-day weekend turned into five. I can't say I'm mad about it. Did I catch up on the bookish work that I had to do? Absolutely not. We absolutely vibed and I read quite a lot... I also nostalgia-watched Phineas and Ferb. What a time.

In January, I managed to read 15 books. I'm very pleased with it all. It's honestly quite graphic novel-heavy, but I really loved what I read. I also did the thing where I kept mood reading, starting books on whims, and not finishing anything I had previously started. I currently have seven books marked as 'currently reading' on Goodreads, if that says anything about my fickle reading moods.

One of the main reasons I think I read so much this month is the readathon I hosted with my friends. Essentially, I had three of my friends come over, sleep over all with the goal to read as much as we possibly could. It was magical and so much fun. We are definitely doing it again. If you're interested in seeing some sort of content for our 24 Hour Read-a-Thons, let me know in the comments! Until then, I'll be casually posting those nights on my stories via Instagram.

Anyway! Here’s my January reading wrap-up!

{Weekend Reads: 09/10-09/13} Catching Up on eARCs, audioARCs, and Buddy Reads!

Hey, guys!

I used to update you all via Goodreads and blog updates on what I was reading, but I decided to start it back up this weekend to touch base with you all and push out some books that I definitely recommend.

A weekend doesn't usually include a Thursday, but I'm being quarantined for the next couple of days, so I'm including it because who knows when I'll be cleared to go back to work.

I've been attempting to get used to a new work schedule, so my reading time has been considerably cut and it's been a process to get used to working full time. The past four years were taken up by school, working 2 part-time jobs, and attempting to keep up with social obligations. Being in quarantine from March to Jun was such a weird change, but going back to a regular schedule is just as strange.

This (long) weekend, I plan on catching up on the four books that I've started in the past couple of weeks before diving into two buddy reads that start on Monday.

#1] The Switch by Beth O'Leary,

performed by Daisy Edgar-Jones & Alison Steadman

Current Reading position: 80% (2 hours left)
-audioARC provided by NetGalley & Macmillan Audio-

Synopsis:

When overachiever Leena Cotton is ordered to take a two-month sabbatical after blowing a big presentation at work, she escapes to her grandmother Eileen's house for some long-overdue rest.

Eileen is newly single and about to turn eighty. She'd like a second chance at love, but her tiny Yorkshire village doesn't offer many eligible gentlemen.

So they decide to try a two-month swap.

Eileen will live in London and look for love. She’ll take Leena’s flat, and learn all about casual dating, swiping right, and city neighbors. Meanwhile, Leena will look after everything in rural Yorkshire: Eileen’s sweet cottage and garden, her idyllic, quiet village, and her little neighborhood projects.

But stepping into one another's shoes proves more difficult than either of them expected. Will swapping lives help Eileen and Leena find themselves…and maybe even find true love? In Beth O'Leary's The Switch, it's never too late to change everything....or to find yourself.

My Thoughts So Far:

- This is an excellent audio experience. I love the narrators and the quality of this production.
- I love Leena and Eileen. They're so similar, yet so different and bring so much to the story.
- I think I prefer Eileen's half of the story to Leena's. That isn't to say that Leena's is bad, but Eileen is so hilarious and lovely. I'm just drawn to her story more.
- The romances in this story do not take up the majority of this story. It's more a story of healing and growth, which I adore. I cannot wait to see how this story ends. However, I'm not the biggest fan of Leena's love story. It hasn't come to its climax, but I know how it's going to go. It's been done before and it isn't anything new. Eileen, however -- I hope it turns out how I'm envisioning.
- This is my first Beth O'Leary novel, but I'm eager to listen to or read The Flatshare soon.

Anticipated rating: 4 stars

#2] Blood & Honey (Serpent & Dove #2) by Shelby Mahurin

Current Reading position: page 110/528
-personally pre-ordered-

I'm so behind on this buddy read! I was supposed to have this finished on Thursday, the 10th, but it definitely hasn't happened. This past weekend and this week have just been odd. I'm not sure why I haven't finished this book because the first 110 pages were fantastic. I just need to pick it back up. I've been carrying it around the house? But I haven't opened the book? Just odd.

Synopsis:

After narrowly escaping death at the hands of the Dames Blanches, Lou, Reid, Coco, and Ansel are on the run from coven, kingdom, and church—fugitives with nowhere to hide.

To elude the scores of witches and throngs of chasseurs at their heels, Lou and Reid need allies. Strong ones. But protection comes at a price, and the group is forced to embark on separate quests to build their forces. As Lou and Reid try to close the widening rift between them, the dastardly Morgane baits them in a lethal game of cat and mouse that threatens to destroy something worth more than any coven.

First Thoughts:

- Wow, I already love this so much and I cannot wait to read more.
- Witchy goodness right off the bat? Hello, yes, please!
- Lou and Reid are just going to go right for it, huh? Geez, I love love.  Let's go.
- I know that I'm going to be hurt by this book... is that why I haven't picked it back up yet?

Anticipated rating: 5 stars

#3] All Scot and Bothered (Devil You Know #2) by Kerrigan Byrne

Current Reading position: 5% (loc. 256/4928)
-eARC provided by NetGalley & St. Martin's Press-

Synopsis:

They are a dangerous duke, a fierce lord, and an infamous earl—dark, bold, brave men who know exactly what they want. And there is only one woman who can bring them to their knees...

He is first and foremost—at everything. A man who's made his own way in the world through ruthless cunning and sheer force of will. A strong and imposing Scot who can turn on the charm but does not suffer fools. His title: Lord Chief Justice of the High Court. His name: Cassius Gerard Ramsay. His mission: To investigate the goings-on at London's most notorious gaming hell, owned and operated by one of the most intriguing and desirable women he's ever met.

IN THIS GAME OF LOVE, THE RULES DO NOT APPLY

Cecelia Teague was an orphan facing a rather dire future—until a secret benefactor from her mother's scandalous past swept into her life. Sent to a prestigious boarding school and later to university, Cecelia believed high society was at her fingertips...Then, from out of nowhere, she became the inheritor of a gambling establishment. Now Cecelia must live two lives: one as a proper lady who finds herself undeniably drawn to Lord Ramsay and the other as a savvy gaming hell owner trying to save her business from the very same man. He has no idea she is both women...and Cecelia would like to keep it that way. But what happens when consuming passion and escalating danger threaten to reveal the truth?

First Thoughts:

- I've never read a Kerrigan Byrne novel before, but I'm already invested and enjoying her style of writing and the way she's developed her characters.
- Most times when I'm starting a new historical romance novel, I can tell within the first 50 pages if I will enjoy it as intensely as I love my favorites. This has a lot of promise.

Anticipated rating: (it's honestly too early to tell, but...) 4 stars (probably)

#4] Crazy Stupid Bromance (Bromance Book Club #3) by Lyssa Kay Adams

Current Reading position: 17% (loc. 856/5079)
- eARC provided by NetGalley & Berkley-

Synopsis:

A hacktivist and a cat café owner decode the friend zone in this romantic comedy from the author of Undercover Bromance.

Alexis Carlisle and her cat café, ToeBeans, have shot to fame after she came forward as a victim of a celebrity chef’s sexual harassment. When a new customer approaches to confide in her, the last thing Alexis expects is for the woman to claim they’re sisters. Unsure what to do, Alexis turns to the only man she trusts—her best friend, Noah Logan.

Computer genius Noah left his rebellious teenage hacker past behind to become a computer security expert. Now he only uses his old skills for the right cause. But Noah’s got a secret: He’s madly in love with Alexis. When she asks for his help, he wonders if the timing will ever be right to confess his crush.

Noah’s pals in The Bromance Book Club are more than willing to share their beloved “manuals” to help him go from bud to boyfriend. But he must decide if telling the truth is worth risking the best friendship he’s ever had.

First Thoughts

- This is so excellent! I was instantly hooked and caught up in where the story left off in Undercover Bromance.

- I honestly forgot about the computer genius, Noah, but I've already fallen in love with him. He's a Whovian (Doctor Who), he's a total sweetheart, and has a rival that's Alexis's cat! How adorable.

- Alexis is peak-bad bitch material. I adore her. She obviously has a lot of trauma to get past after dealing with the events of Undercover Bromance, but even more hardship has been added onto her plate. We will see how this goes.

- I love that we get to see more from Liv and Mack. Give me all of the happy endings, snark, and groomzilla energy from Mack.

Hopefully, I can finish these books this weekend. I'm aiming to finish The Switch this afternoon and get to the halfway mark of Blood and Honey as well.

Anticipated rating: 5 stars

What are you reading this weekend?
Happy reading!

January 2018 Reading Wrap Up + Currently Reading

Hey, guys!

     This month has been a crazy productive reading month.. but not really. I've been working on reading Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo for the longest time, but I've also managed to procrastinate everything with graphic novels! Hooray! I've also managed to finish 2 books for my classes and read too much boring textbook stuff. Today I'm going to share with you what I'm reading and listening to and about the books I read this month!

  1. Quests For Glory (The School For Good & Evil: The Camelot Years #1) by Soman Chainani
    • 4.5 stars
    • Review coming soon!
  2. Rebel With A Cupcake by Anna Mainwaring
    • 3 stars
    • Review coming soon!
  3. A Good Cry by Nikki Giovanni
    • 3 stars
    • This was an ok poetry and prose anthology, but there were only 3 poems that I actually liked enough to be excited about them.
  4. Turn of the Screw by Henry James
    • I HATE THIS BOOK
    • I will not review this book. It would be a giant bash fest + uneducated psychological assumptions.
  5. Friendship to the Max (Lumberjanes #2) by Noelle Stevenson
    • 4.5 stars
  6. Lumberjanes/Gotham Academy Volume 1 by Chyna Clungston Flores
    • 4.5 stars
  7. The Faust Act (The Wicked & The Divine #1) by
    • 5 stars
  8. Fandemonium (The Wicked & The Divine #2) by
    • 5 stars
  9. (The Wicked & The Divine #3) by
    • 4 stars
  10. (The Wicked & The Divine #4) by
    • 4 stars
  11. (The Wicked & The Divine #5) by
    • 5 stars
  12. (The Wicked & The Divine #6) by

  14. A Terrible Plan (Lumberjanes #3) by Noelle Stevenson
    • 4 stars
  15. Two Worlds, One Cop (Sex Criminals Volume 2) by Matt Fraction & Chip Zdarksy
    • 3 stars
  16. Don Quixote Book 1 by Cervantes
    • I DON'T LIKE THIS BOOK EITHER! This was for class.
    • I will not review this book.
      I'm really behind on reviews, but I'm working hard to get some churned out. School takes up all of my time and I barely have any time to read at all. The only reason I could read this much was because I took a 5-hour break to binge the graphic novels. I really should have done my homework that day... Oops...

Currently Reading:

I also really wanted to show you guys the books I'm currently reading. There are quite a few and most are for classes, but whatever. Here they are!

  1. Girl Interrupted by Susanna Kaysen
    • CR // 91/169
    • I've already read half of this book for my second literature class and I actually really enjoy it. This book instigates a great discussion on mental health and mental health in the 1960s.
  2. Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo
    • CR// 246/546
    • I've been reading this since the beginning of January, but school has stopped me from fully allowing myself to be immersed in it. I really want to continue, but every time I continue, I get irresponsible and want to just sit down and read instead of doing homework. I looove it though. I can't wait for a break to finish it.
  3. Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert
    • CR// 0/329
    • I'm starting this book this weekend for one of my literature classes, so hopefully, it was better than Don Quixote...
  4. Sass & Sorcery (Rat Queens Volume 1) by Kurtis J. Wiebe & Roc Upchurch
    • CR// 46/128
    • I started this today to pass the time before my hair appointment and I'm intrigued to say the least.
  5. Ready Player One by Ernest Cline
    • CR// 305/374
    • Reread + first time listening buddy read with my boyfriend
These don't include the books that are on my currently reading shelf that I've put on hold. I'll get to them, but I'm still waiting.

I'm really excited to finish these books.

What did you read in January? What are you going to read next?

Happy reading!

[Currently Reading] Late August~September Reading Plans

Hey, guys!

    This week I actually haven't gotten much reading done, however, I've been getting back into the swing of things and doing my best to start this year right...so this means less time devoted to reading. This also means I'll try to post 3 times a week, but I can't guarantee that it will happen consistently over the next couple weeks. There's a 3 week period where I allow myself to get used to my new routine and get a solid system down. Once I get a good system down, I'll set up a consistent schedule for reviews and such. Please bear with me!

    Okay, so if you've read my last blog post about my excessive amount of books on my currently reading shelf, and I've finally made an exact reading plan/TBR. Of course, I'm not going to force myself to read whenever I do not have time, whenever I'm too tired, or whenever I'm just not feeling it. I will, however, do my best to finish these books before starting another. Anyway, here are the books and my progress with them. I'll also include the texts I've already started for classes.

For Fun CR:

  • Heir of Fire (Throne of Glass #3) by Sarah J. Maas
    • 61% through
    • So far, I adore this book. Once I finish the rest of these books, I'm going to be bingeing this series.
  • Strange the Dreamer (Strange the Dreamer #1) by Laini Taylor
    • 20% through
    • This book is really intriguing, but I really wanted something more fast paced. I'm excited to go back to this one.
  • Daughter of the Blood (The Black Jewels #1) by Anne Bishop
    • 35% through
    • I started this because someone said it gave them ACOTAR vibes and SJM loves this series. So, I just had to!
  • City of Glass (The Mortal Instruments #3) by Cassandra Clare
    • 54% through
    • I've also been working on this for a while. I just haven't been in the mood to continue with the Shadowhunter world. I know I will later.
  • Uprooted by Naomi Novik
    • 66% through
    • This has been on my shelf for two years! I recently checked this out from the library so I can actually finish it.

Buddy Read/Book Club:

  • Ready Player One by Ernest Cline
    • 47% through
    • I'm currently listening to this with Alex. It's his second time listening and my first time listening/second time reading. I love this book.
    • My 2015 review: {click here}
  • I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education & Was Shot by the Taliban by Malala Yousafzai
    • My university has chosen this book for their August diverse book club pick. In early September, we're going to go see Malala speak at a university a couple hours away. I'm really excited.

School Texts

  • The Odyssey by Homer
    • 2% through
    • I'm reading this for my literature class. We're not reading the whole thing, so I'm not sure if I'll count it as even read. Probably won't be included in my Goodreads challenge.
  • Utilitarianism by John Stuart Mill
    • 37% through
    • I hate this so much. I hate philosophy and I've only gone to 2 meetings for the class. I'm not

      As I'm typing up this blog post, I am currently reading Heir of Fire as my active read. I plan on finishing it by the end of the weekend and starting up I Am Malala. Once I finish those two books, I'll go on with the rest of the books, starting with the books I'm farthest in and just keep going. So...here is that list, I guess.
  1. Heir of Fire
  2. I Am Malala
  3. Uprooted
  4. City of Glass
  5. Daughter of the Blood
  6. Strange the Dreamer
Because I'm reading Ready Player One with Alex, I'm not adding it to the list. We just listen to it when we're in the car and out and about.

If you think I should read these books in a different order or if you have a suggestion for my next read after this batch, then comment below!

Happy Reading!

{Friday Reads #1} Currently Reading 8/18 ~ 8/20

Hey, guys!

I'm currently a mess and I can't make up my mind when it comes to committing to a book. I currently have 6 books on my currently reading shelf, which is absolutely ridiculous. I'm currently committed to Heir of Fire by Sarah J. Maas, but I also want to read and finish the other 5 books on my shelf. It's crazy!

~Currently Reading~

These are the books that I am currently actively reading. I am a mess and I can't make up my mind.

  • Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor
    • Currently on: page 109/536
    • Super slow, but I like it. I needed something fast paced for my anxious mood before the semester starts.
  • Heir of Fire (Throne of Glass #3) by Sarah J. Maas
    • Currently on: page 113/565
    • My fast paced read to make up for the slow going of StD.
  • Ready Player One by Ernest Cline
    • Currently on: page 175/372
      • I'm currently listening to this book on audio with my boyfriend, Alex. It's a re-listen for him and a reread for me. I read this book back in 2015.
      • My 2015 Review: {click here}

~Currently on Hold~

      These are the books I've put on hold, but I know I'll get back into. There are some books that I enjoy, but I get bored. I'm not usually one to have 7 books on my currently reading shelf, but that's who I've become this summer. Save me.
  • City of Glass (The Mortal Instruments #3) by Cassandra Clare
    • Currently on: 292/541
    • I put this on hold because I wasn't feeling the Shadowhunter vibes. I sometimes go back to it when I get in the mood or when I'm not in the mood for my current read. I love it, but for some reason, I'm not on the edge of my seat to finish it right now.
  • Daughter of the Blood (The Black Jewels #1) by Anne Bishop
    • Currently on: 135/384
    • I put this on hold for a readalong or for a book club book. It's really dark, so I'm waiting until I'm back into that dark mood. It's also really heavy, so it's a book I'd need to be in a specific mood for. I kinda want to go back to it soon. It's not one of those books I think I'll DNF.
  • Uprooted by Naomi Novik [not shown]
    • Currently at: 286/435
    • I've kind of had this on my currently reading shelf for 2 years...I should finish this book. I don't own it, but I can always access it at the library I work at.

As you can see, I'm a mess. For some r, ason nothing is holding my interest, but I still want to read the books! I really don't know what's going on. My brain does not want to process great books!

Comment below if you've ever gone through this. I'd love to find a fellow mess of a reader.

Happy reading!

A Confusing August 2017 TBR?

Hey, guys!

      This is just a ramble/list of what I want to read, but I probably won't read yet. I'm such a huge mood reader. If I'm not interested, I won't read it until I'm ready. I just have found that I enjoy what I read more when I just go with my gut. I go back to school on the 21st, so hopefully, I get a good chunk of these (or any) books read. I'm currently reading two books, so I'll just discuss those books and then get into what I want to read soon. I don't expect myself to. There's no push. I feel a reading slump coming on (we'll blame This Adventure Ends by Emma Mills).

Currently Reading:
  • Seraphina by Rachel Hartman {audio + physical}
    • Currently at: 147/499 (30%)
  • Ready Player One by Ernest Cline {reread/listen with my boyfriend, Alex}
    • Currently at: 17.4%
  • City of Glass (The Mortal Instruments #3) by Cassandra Clare
    • Currently at: 292/541 (54%)
  • Snowball (Chronicles of a Wererabbit #1) by M.Y. Zeman
    • Currently at: 71/235 (30%)

Required/Sponsored Reading:

{this includes review books or ARCs}
  • Snowball (Chronicles of a Wererabbit #1) by M.Y. Zeman
    • From M.Y. Zeman - out now!
  • Secrets of the Tally by Halie Fewkes
    • From Halie Fewkes - out now!
  • The Lost Causes by Jessica Koosed Etting & Alyssa Embree Schwartz
    • From KCP Loft - out September 5th
  • Mothers and Other Strangers by Gina Sorell

Hope To Get To:

{buddy reads with Julia & books I just really want to read ASAP}

  • Siege & Storm (Grisha #2) by Leigh Bardugo
    • Borrowed from Julia - I'm DYING to start this...but terrified
  • Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor
  • A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab
  • Heir of Fire (Throne of Glass #3) by Sarah J. Maas

~~~
      I'm such a dork. There's no way that I'd read this much before school. These are just my options. I have more books I should knock out of my TBR, but these are the ones that appeal to me at the moment. I just went through a contemporary/romance kick, so I'm not completely out of that. I'm just gradually going back in my (ever-present) fantasy kick. There are just so many fantasy books on my TBR...
Let me know what you'd like to read this month in the comments!
Happy reading!
February (Tentative) TBR
I've decided to post a bit of a tentative TBR for this next month. I really want to keep my TBR, so I'm just going to choose 6-ish books this month. Hopefully, I get to at least one book in each category this month. I have been mood-reading lately, so hopefully, I want to read these by the end of the month.
My Two Current Reads
  1. Spinning Starlight by R.C. Lewis
  2. Off the Page by Samantha Van Leer & Jodi Picoult
Hopefully I get to all of these books, but who knows? Life happens.
Happy reading and Happy New Year!
